Raffaella Bruzzi-Chervaz is an Italian-Swiss contemporary artist. Born in Milan and raised in Piedmont, Italy, she studied engineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan before moving to Switzerland. She later pursued doctoral research in life sciences at the University of Lausanne and worked in the Swiss banking sector before developing her career as a self-taught artist.
Bruzzi's artistic practice includes abstract and mixed-media painting. Her work frequently draws on imagery associated with natural landscapes, including the sea, sky, earth and horizon.[1]
Early life and education
Bruzzi was born in Milan and grew up in Piedmont, northern Italy. She studied classical subjects before pursuing engineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan.
During her engineering studies, she spent periods in Switzerland, including at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), through the Erasmus Programme and subsequently in connection with her diploma project. In 2004, she moved permanently to the Lausanne region and undertook doctoral research at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne. She obtained a doctorate in life sciences in 2007.
Scientific career
During her engineering studies, she spent periods in Switzerland, including at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), through the Erasmus Programme and subsequently in connection with her diploma project. In 2004, she moved permanently to the Lausanne region and undertook doctoral research at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne. She obtained a doctorate in life sciences in 2007.
Bruzzi's scientific work included research related to environmental and occupational health. She was a co-author of scientific publications concerning human exposure to airborne pollutants and the assessment of environmental impacts. In 2009, she co-authored a study published in Environmental Science & Technology, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Chemical Society.[2]
Following her doctoral studies, Bruzzi worked in the Swiss banking sector while developing her artistic practice.
Artistic career
Bruzzi began painting in 2009 as a self-taught artist. Her artistic practice developed alongside her professional career and subsequently became a central part of her work.[3]
Her paintings combine abstraction with references to natural landscapes. She has worked with mixed media and materials including acrylic and oil paint, natural pigments, sand, marble dust, wood and iron particles, resin, tar, paper and fabric.
A recurring subject in her work is the relationship between landscape and inner experience. Her series I Paesaggi dell'anima explores imagined landscapes through elements such as the sea, sky, earth, light, and horizon.
Her work has been exhibited in Switzerland[4], France and Italy in solo and group exhibitions, galleries, cultural institutions and art fairs.
Exhibitions and recognition
In 2024, Bruzzi's work was selected by the Fondation L'Estrée and presented at the International Art Fair of Lausanne.[5]
In 2025, she presented the solo exhibition Odyssée at the Galerie de l'Hôpital de Morges, part of the Ensemble Hospitalier de la Côte. The exhibition included works from her Il mio Mare series.[6][7] In the same year, her two-work presentation Terra e Cielo at Expo Avenches received the public's choice distinction, Coup de cœur du public.
In 2025, Bruzzi received the public's choice distinction (Coup de cœur du public) at Expo Avenches for her presentation Terra e Cielo.
In February 2026, Bruzzi presented Lumière et Matière at La Vidondée in Riddes, Valais.[8] She also participated in the 24th Biennale d'art de Divonne-les-Bains and exhibited at galleries and cultural venues in Basel, Montreux and Avenches.
From August to September 2026, she presented the solo exhibition Les Paysages de l'âme at the Galerie du Château in Avenches.[9]
In July 2026, Bruzzi participated in the 23rd edition of the Premio Nazionale Città di Novara in Novara, Italy. Her work received a joint commendation from the artistic committee, an event reported by Corriere di Novara.[10][11]
