As a little boy Beyah wanted to be an astronaut, but was ultimately drawn to the field of computer engineering through his love for video games[8]. He matriculated through the Atlanta Public Schools System[9][circular reference] and ultimately graduated form Frederick Douglass High School[10]. Beyah received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina A&T State University[11][circular reference] in 1998 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech[12][circular reference] in 1999 and 2003, respectively[13][14]. His thesis A Deployable Approach to Better Than Best Effort Quality of Service was advised by professors John A. Copeland and Raghupathy Sivakumar.
Career
Beyah began his career working at Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting)[15]. After being promoted to the level of Consultant, Beyah left Accenture and returned to Georgia Tech to pursue a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, advised by Professor John A. Copeland. While completing his Ph.D., he worked as a Research Engineer at Georgia Tech. In 2005 he joined the department of Computer Science at Georgia State University as an assistant professor while maintaining an adjunct professor appointment at Georgia Tech. In 2011, he returned to Georgia Tech full time as an associate professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Beyah’s research interest are in the areas of network security and monitoring, cyber-physical systems security, network traffic characterization and performance, and critical infrastructure security[16]. Beyah’s works have been cited thousands of times[17]. He and his research group have discovered several flaws in critical infrastructure components[18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. Additionally, his work has been highlighted in popular media (e.g., Forbes[25], USA Today[26]) dozens of times. In 2017, Beyah and his students introduced a proof of concept of the first ransomware for programmable logic controllers - LogicLocker[27][circular reference].
