A driving motor car is an railway carriage in a multiple unit trains with traction equipment fitted to the coach. More recent practice is to place traction equipment beneath the floor within EMUs and DMUs.

DMs were used a lot in the past, particularly in the London Underground with the Standard Stock, Gate Stock, 1900 stock and the Waterloo and city railway EMUs all featuring DMs.[citation needed]
An example of a two car unit with a single driving motor coach is with a trailer at the other end is the 2-BIL. The 4CEP and 4COR[1] are examples of four car unit with a driving motor at both ends. In these cases, as originally built, a guards compartment was provided in the driving motor car. By contrast a development of the 4-CEP, the 4CIG, brought the guards compartment and traction equipment to a centre coach.
