"Raincoats and Recipes" is the final episode of season 4 of the American comedy-drama series Gilmore Girls. It originally aired on The WB in the United States on 18 May, 2004. The episode was written and directed by series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.
The episode centers around Lorelai and Sookie operating a test-run of the soon-to-be-opened Dragonfly Inn.
Plot[edit]
The episode opens with Rory over-energised in the middle of the night, making macaroni and cheese and washing her clothes on return from Yale. This wakes Lorelai up. Lorelai shuts Rory in her room, while declaring "It's good to have you home, hon!"
Rory visits Lane and tells her that Jess came to her dormitory at Yale, telling Rory that he loves her. Rory compares Jess to Dean, saying about Dean that she thinks "she really blew it there" in breaking up with Dean.
Rory meets Lorelai at Luke's, where Lorelai tells Rory that she is unsure about the current status of her relationship with Luke. She wonders if a series of social interactions like attending a wedding together, and going to the movies, equates to the two of them starting to date.
At Friday night dinner, things are tense with Emily and Richard. Emily and Richard are short with each other. Emily invites Rory to accompany her to Europe. Lorelai states that she and Sookie will be running a test run of the soon-to-be-opened Dragonfly Inn. Lorelai invites Emily and Richard to attend.
Lorelai, Sookie and Michel organise the test run of the inn. Miss Patty, Babette and Morey, Luke, Kirk and Lulu and Taylor are staying overnight in the inn to help Lorelai and Sookie detect if there are any faults in their operation. Kirk approaches Luke about his night terrors. Kirk is worried that he and Lulu have never spent a full night together and that she will be distressed by his actions.
Richard and Emily are assigned a room that is separate to the main inn. They are outraged at being isolated from the other guests, while they are experiencing tension in their marriage. While they are berating Lorelai about her decision to place them in an isolated room, Jason shows up at the inn. Jason asks to stay but Lorelai tells him that she is too busy to focus on him and that she has no spare rooms available.
Rory goes home to fetch some music for the inn, and Dean arrives at the house. Rory and Dean have sex in her bedroom. This experience is Rory's first time at sexual intercourse.
Lorelai comes home, startling Dean and Rory. They hurriedly dress and Dean leaves the house. Lorelai peers into Rory's bedroom where Rory's bed is clearly mussed. It is clear to Lorelai that Rory and Dean have had sex. Rory starts to explain that she did not plan the experience, and that she was sorry she didn't advise Lorelai before it happened.
Lorelai is very upset with Rory, as Dean is married and tells Rory that she was cheating with Dean. Rory calls Dean's mobile phone and Lindsay, his wife, answers the phone. Rory starts to cry, and the episode ends.
