Raissa Butkowski is an Australian lawyer and politician serving as a councillor on the Albury City Council. In March 2026, she was preselected as the Liberal Party candidate for the 2026 Farrer by-election, triggered by the resignation of former Liberal leader Sussan Ley.
Early life and education
Butkowski was born and raised in the Albury region of New South Wales, growing up in a farming family.[1]
She holds an undergraduate honours degree in biomedical science from La Trobe University and a degree in law from Deakin University.[2] Additionally, she has earned a qualification in nutrition and a Graduate Certificate in Conflict Management and Resolution. As of 2026, she is a candidate for a Master of Business Administration (MBA).[3]
Professional career
Before beginning her legal career, Butkowski worked as a pathology laboratory technician and as a tennis coach.[4]
She currently serves as a senior community lawyer at the Hume Riverina Community Legal Service. In this role, she provides legal assistance to regional families facing financial hardship and farmers navigating regulatory issues.[3] She is also a member of the Board of the Murray Darling Association, where she advocates for water security and regional infrastructure within the Murray-Darling Basin.[1]
Local government
Butkowski was elected to the Albury City Council at the 2021 local government elections. During her term, she has been a vocal proponent of infrastructure investment and fiscal responsibility within the council's budget.[2]
2026 Farrer by-election
Following the resignation of Sussan Ley from Federal Parliament in February 2026, Butkowski was preselected by the NSW Liberal Party on 15 March 2026 to contest the seat of Farrer. She won the preselection ballot against Lachlan McIntyre, a former staffer to Ley.[2]
