Rajen Sharma

Uddipta Hazarika (Real name: Rajen Sharma)[lower-alpha 1] was the first Publicity secretary of the militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).[1][2][3][4] Known for his popular poem Mor Rakta Borna Protigya (Assamese: মোৰ ৰক্তবৰ্ণ প্ৰতিজ্ঞা), he was killed on 8 October 1989 in Nalbari town.[5][6][7]
Reports claimed that Uddpita was the first martyr of the outfit,[8][9] as the outfit was banned by government of India[10][11] after one year of his killing.[12]
In memory of Uddipta, journalist Parag Kumar Das dedicated his book Changlot Fenla citing Uddipta Alias Rajen Sharma as martyr[13][14] and National Hero[15].
Early Life
Uddipta (Rajen Sharma) was born to a teacher family and had a good academic background. After passing HSLC, he studied at the noted Cotton College in Guwahati.[16][17] However, he didn't complete his study and joined the militant outfit.
Life in Militancy
Uddipta (Rajen Sharma) joined the ULFA in the early 80s and became the first Publicity Secretary of the outfit. Joining the outfit, Rajen Sharma adopted his organizational name as Uddipta Hazarika. As the ULFA's ideologue, several motivated youths joined the outfit under the leadership of Uddipta Hazarika.[18]
As Publicity Secretary of ULFA
As the Publicity Secretary of the ULFA, Uddipta Hazarika was very vocal with his writings in newspapers and pamphlets. Sharma published all pamphlets and the outfit's mouthpiece "Swadhinata" on behalf of the outfit.[19] Uddipta Hazarika also published ULFA's propaganda magazine "Bixex Prachar Patrika. Doi-Kaun-Rang", which is still a resource for writers.[20][21]
Death
On 8th October 1989, Uddipta alias Rajen Sharma was lynched by a mob after he and his mate Hitesh Kalita alias Raju Baruah entered the house of Nemi Chand Jain, in front of the Nalbari Hari Mandir.[22][23][24] There was some gunfight and after the incident, Sampat Jain, Mulchand Jain, Satish Tamuli, Rajkumar Sharmah and Rajen Sharma were killed in that incident.[25] Many of his poetry followers came out with late Sharma's poem.[26]
On Uddipta alias Rajen Sharma's death, the outfit ULFA held a public condolence meeting in the native village of Uddipta, where he was offered organizational condolences with flag hosting and blank firing.[27] The district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) called a "bandh" (closure for 24 hours) on the very next day in protest of the killing of Rajen Sharma.[24]
