Rajesh Rajan
Rajesh Rajan (born 1979, Thiruvananthapuram) is an Indian born Kuwait-based cardiologist,[1][2] who serves as Chairman Board of Governors of the Indian Association of Clinical Cardiologists.[3][4] Rajan has been responsible for a range of clinical research registries in heart failure, and has published extensively on the subject. He is an active member of several global cardiology forums and committees. Presently, he works at Sabah Al-Ahmad Cardiac Center, Al-Amiri Hospital, Kuwait.[5][6][7]
Early life and education
Dr. Rajesh Rajan was born in 1979 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala to Adv. Koodal Rajan A.V., a lawyer, and P.N Vasanthamma, a teacher. After completing his early schooling at Holy Angels, Adoor, he did his secondary level at Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram.[8] He graduated in medicine from RUDN University in 2003, followed by a fellowship in Cardiovascular Surgery from Bakulev Scientific Center of Cardiovascular Surgery in 2005. He did his Compulsory Rotating Resident Internship (CRRI) from the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.[8] He then obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Cardiology from Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and a Ph.D in cardiology from RUDN University.[9] In 2013, Rajesh relocated to Kuwait and continued his research in heart failure and Cardio-Renal Anemia Syndrome. His academic achievements earned him fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians, London, Edinburgh, Glasgow & Ireland, European Society of Cardiology, American College of Cardiology, and American Heart Association.[10]
Dr. Rajan and Dr. Kotevski proposed a new classification for single coronary artery (SCA): Rajan's and Kotevski's TYPE-IV (R-IV-C) modified Lipton's classification. It was defined as type-IV quadfurcation of a single coronary artery from the right aortic sinus. He also invented the Rajan's Heart Failure (R-hf) Risk Score.[11][12] This Risk Score devised by Rajan helps clinicians to estimate the risk in patients diagnosed with Heart Failure with reduced Ejection Fraction (HFrEF).[13]
Career
Rajesh Rajan is the Founder President & Chairman Board of Governors of the Indian Association of Clinical Cardiologists.[14][15][16] representing the nation's clinical cardiologists to the federal government and providing commentaries on the role of cardiology in current events. He has also been participated in the Indo-Soviet Cardiology Research Project of KIMS Hospital and RUDN University.[17][18] His research has been featured in various medical journals. In addition, Dr. Rajan is currently the President of the Association of Indian Alumni of RUDN University as well as the Association of MD Physicians.[2]
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Rajan is actively involved in teaching and training young cardiologists. He has been a faculty member for several national and international conferences and has conducted numerous workshops and training programs in cardiology. Rajesh has held several academic appointments. In 2017, he was appointed as the supervisor of the undergraduate medical research program (SSS) of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and as the supervisor of the undergraduate medical clinical placement program (PY2CP) at the University of Reading, United Kingdom. In 2019, he was appointed as a visiting lecturer at the Medical Institute of RUDN University.[8]
Rajan is a hospital director in Kerala, India, and the director of an Ayurvedic Center. Previously, he worked as a consultant cardiologist at Sri Sathya Sai Hospital, and Ananthapuri Hospitals and Research Institute. He is also a charter president of the Rotary Club of Koodal. At present, he is the President of Association for the Promotion of Culture and Education (APEC) Kuwait in a professional capacity.[13][2]
Dr. Rajan is also the Founder and Managing Editor of the Journal "Annals of Clinical Cardiology" published by Wolters Kluwer, which serves as the official publication of the Indian Association of Clinical Cardiologists.[2]
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), under the Government of India, organized a meeting on February 6, 2018, to review the pricing of cardiac stents. Dr. Rajesh, representing the Indian Association of Clinical Cardiologists, was among the seven committee members invited by the NPPA. Following this meeting, a decision was made to implement a historical price cap on cardiac stents, which proved beneficial for numerous financially disadvantaged patients. Additionally, the NPPA requested hospitals to separately mention the prices of catheters, balloons, and guide wires in their bills.
