Rajib Karmakar is a Los Angeles-based Sitar player, recording artist, composer and educator of Indian classical music and World music originally from Bengal, India.[4] He is both a solo artist and also currently a member of the musical projects HUM Ensemble and Wahh World Fusion - and is additionally a frequent collaborator with the international bands Fuzorhythm (India), Loop Science (Germany) and Nada Naissance (France).[5][6] He has performed in the countries of India, the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, and others.[7][8]
Karmakar received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Music from California Institute of the Arts[9] and is the founder and current director of the Los Angeles International Music and Arts Academy (LAIMA).[10] He is also the inventor of the Mayur Tantri, the world first double-necked electric sitar.[11]

Early life
Born into a musical Bengali family, Rajib is a third generation musician. He symbolically received a sitar on his very first birthday, which he actually began learning to play at the young age of four instructed by father, the musician and conductor Sri Durgadas Karmakar. Rajib gave his first public performance at the age of six and at the age of eight performed for a large audience for the first time as the opening act for his father's seventy-piece orchestra, in front of ten-thousand people. Later, at the age of twelve he performed live on the national public radio station, All India Radio, a division of Prasar Bharati (India's largest broadcaster).[12][13]
He then began to study with his first sitar guru Ustad Ghulam Akbar Khan for a period of eight years. And after making an official decision at age seventeen not to attend engineering school and pursue the life career of a musician, enrolled in Banaras Hindu University. There he met his next sitar guru, Pandit Ram Dass Chakrabarty, staying with him under the Guru–shishya tradition (an ancient tradition where the disciple goes to live and learn from his teacher). Karmakar studied with Chakrabarty for six years, often required to practice the sitar for up to 14 hours a day. From then on, he began to be invited to play regularly in Europe and was exposed to many elements of world music, which he often incorporates into his own classical Indian music training for specific projects.[14][12]
