Rakesh Khatri[1][edit]

Rakesh Khatri, (born on 12 November 1960) a well known documentary film maker turned environmentalist is popularly known as the Nest Man of India[2] for his untiring work on sparrow conservation. He identified the problem of dwindling sparrow population and went to its root cause in 2007-08. After a couple of experiments, he came up with a Nest which is well adaptable by the House Sparrow. Khatri's work in creating eco-friendly birdhouses and raising awareness about the importance of preserving bird habitats have garnered significant recognition and accolades both nationally and internationally. Other than working for the house sparrows, he has committed his life to environmental education and taking the message among the younger generation of the country motivating thought and action among them. He founded an organization called Eco Roots Foundation[3] in 2012.

Early Life[edit]

Rakesh Khatri was born in Delhi and have spend his childhood in Ashok Vihar where he grew with a lot of sparrows nesting in his home every year. He fondly narrates how he used to colour the birds and then see which ones would return to his terrace. For the same, he would be scolded and beaten up by his parents. There is where his love for sparrows or birds have begun.

Environmentalist[edit]

In 2004, he left his high paying job with Reliance and decided to work on environmental awareness and chose his target to be the students of schools and colleges. He was involved in multiple environmental awareness programs including the revival of the Garhi Mandu Forest along with setting up a Nature Trail inside the residence of the then Delhi CM Smt. Shiela Dixit. The nature trail thus developed was around the bungalow and used to introduce the visitors to the native herbs, shrubs and trees of Delhi. The residence became a biodiversity hotspot with thousands of bats living there along with many other avian creatures.

Nest Man of India[4][edit]

In 2007, he came across the problem of dwindling population of house sparrows and with his fundamental research, he found that the major reason behind it is the non-availability of nesting spaces for the sparrows in our houses. So, he decided to create nests for sparrows, and this went into couple of experiments which finally resulted in the Jute Nests which has made him the Nest Man of India. The first 20 nests that he had put in early February 2008 in Kundlali Anaj Mandi, Delhi was the start of the movement. First nest got adopted on 8 February 2008 and since then with over 6000 workshops engaging with over 15 lakh people have made over 6.8 lakh nests across India. It has been reported by agencies that the sparrow population in Delhi and around has increased 11 times between 2008 to 2020 due to the efforts of Rakesh Khatri ji.
