Ralph Hosier

Ralph Hosier (born 1967) is a Chartered Engineer, business owner, TV presenter, Journalist and teacher. He runs a successful vehicle modification business Ralph Hosier Engineering Ltd. (RHEL) in Bedfordshire, England.

Education.

Ralph struggled against a traditional education system due to his Dyslexia and mild Autism (Asperger's syndrome), despite having difficulties at school he went on to gain an Engineering Diploma and then progress to Warwick University to gain an Honors degree in Computer Systems Engineering[1]with a final year project in self learning engine controls. After graduating he worked for the Ford Motor Company research and development center in Essex, England, where he gained Membership of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) [1] and later gained official Chartership with the UK Engineering Council [2]. He is also a Member of the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) [3]. Additionally is a Member of the Guild of Motoring Writers (GoMW) [4] He is on the IMI[2]Professional Register [5] which lists professionals in the UK automotive industry.

Engineering career

Having worked at the Ford research center for seven years he started his own company in 1997 (Ralph Hosier Engineering Ltd. [6]) to service engineering contracts for UK automotive businesses, initially he worked with Rolls Royce Bentley in Crew for three years, working on experimental and concept cars including Project Bali and the first SUV Bentley known as the Bentley Dominator.

From there he set up a special vehicle workshop in Birmingham, England before moving back to Ford to work at their research center in Cologne, Germany.

Returning to the UK two years later he started a contract with Jaguar Land Rover at their research center in Coventry, England, again working on experimental and prototype vehicles as well as concept cars.

During all this time he has also taken on smaller engineering projects with specialist car companies, working on race cars, low volume specialist vehicles and kit car manufacturers.

Since 2017 he has operated from a large workshop in Bedfordshire, England, with a team of skilled mechanics, electricians and engineers building highly specialized vehicles such as the Mitsubishi L200 'Desert Warrior' expedition truck used by Top Gear Magazine for and adventure in the Namibia desert[3] [7]

TV career

Ralph first appeared on TV in 2004 on Men and Motors TV channel series Top Dog Cars, appearing as a panelist in four episodes [8], however he has worked behind the scenes for much longer, starting with the BBC series Panic Mechanic in 2000 where he would work with Ranen Rudra (later seen on Supercar Megabuild) and Edd China (Wheeler Dealers).

More recently he co-presented a series for National Geographic about customizing exotic cars called Supercar Megabuild Supercar Megabuild[4], a series of 4 episodes for Channel 4 (UK) about competitive car building called Mission Ignition [9] and a series of 8 episodes of a show that he co developed with Workerbee TV about building cars from scrap to race against supercars called Scrapyard Supercar [10] which he co presented with Boyzone pop star Shane Lynch Shane Lynch.

Journalism

Despite his dyslexia Ralph has written a number[5]of automotive books [11] and has written for UK car magazines including Octane, Evo, Land Rover Monthly, Classic Car Weekly, Practical Performance car, Practical Classics. He also has a blog site [12] but he has not written anything on this site since 2018 and has contributed very few written article in magazines in the last three years.

Teaching.

Ralph has a passion for teaching and sharing skills. He worked as a college lecturer at Exeter College where he did his engineering diploma in the '80s.

In 2015 he worked with the UK forces motorsport charity Mission Motorsport to create a training department to instruct wounded ex-soldiers to become qualified mechanics.

In 2020 he started offering training courses for car enthusiasts and mechanics[6]at his Bedforshire workshop [13]

Coventry Motofest

in 2014 Ralph was one of the founders of the annual Coventry Motorfest, he was the first person to get a road closure order and turn the Coventry city ring road into a race track for the weekend, putting on a display of circuit racers, off road and rally cars, drifters and Time Attack cars. He is still involved with the project and last year was a judge[7] on the virtual concourse competition [14]

Racing.

Ralph has build race cars and competed in the Jaguar XJS Championship with a V12 6 litre jaguar XJ-S, and the AWDC Comp Safari off road race series in a Bowler Tomcat. He holds an MSA National A Race License.

In the '90s he competed in heavy vehicle trials in an Alvis Stalwart 6x6.

Personal Life. Ralph lives in Cambridgeshire, England, with his wife Diana Evans and their son Peter.
