Ralph Q. Torres, 71, son of Sgt. Rafael Quiñones Torres, came to the presentation from Fort Worth. "I was fortunate enough to attend the dedication for Capt. Chapin at the school alongside my father. He was very proud."
Rafael Torres was one of six brothers enlisted in the military during the war. He once fought several German tanks while armed with just a grenade launcher and a rifle. He passed away in 2004.
Ralph Torres himself served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, although he was based in Northern Italy. In 2006, he followed some of his father's steps in Europe.
"That whole generation of El Pasoans fought in the war. It's very important to honor their names," he said.
Author Gutiérrez hopes that just as those men formed a "unique bond," their families continue the tradition.
"That's one of the best things about writing this book," he said about his book’s heroes' relatives. "Meeting all of you."
