The Mighty Guardian Ranaman (Valerio Vargas) is a fictional superhero appearing in an American Webcomic created and written by Ian Drury with art by Kellen Ryan.

Publication history

Ranaman first appeared in Issue 1 of "The Man Who Was Legion Story Arc"[1] (October 2016) and was created by Ian Drury and Kellen Ryan. The character was created as an original Latino superhero, cited as a Colombian-American.[2]

Fictional character biography

Valerio "Val" Vargas is a young Colombian-American who has been granted the powers of the frog. His origin is as yet unrevealed. He has incredible strength, enhanced healing, can stick to any surface, and can leap enormous distances. By day he lives in his downtown loft on the top floor in New Pandem, the Golden City. His day job is as a superintendent working for the building's landlord, Mr. Stevens. He’s perceived as shy and friendly by his neighbors, his only real friend being Perrita, an American Eskimo dog.

By night he dons his green costume and red goggles to combat evil in the guise of a Red-Eyed Tree Frog, escaping the mundane using the shaft of an old dumbwaiter to access the roof. He patrols the city, battling super villains and collecting bounties, which he uses to fund his war on crime. It also helps him pay the bills.

Powers and abilities

As Ranaman, Val has various powers and abilities with which he battles the forces of evil. It is not yet revealed how he came to possess such powers.

  • Enhanced strength and reflexes, roughly proportional to those of his namesake. Allows him to leap incredible distances.
  • Night Vision.
  • Enhanced Healing.
  • Can stick to any surface like a tree frog, allowing him to scale buildings and crawl along ceilings with ease.
  • Power Gauntlets. His right gauntlet allows him to fire his "grapple-tongue", a versatile and powerful red wire that can serve as a grapple line or for any other uses Ranaman can devise. His left contains a communicator that allows him to speak to "Doc", giving him instant access to her knowledge and resources.
  • Body Armor. A custom enhanced weave of Kevlar, it has the strength to withstand the impact of almost any bullet.
  • Infrared Goggles. A feature that can be activated when hunting down foes.

Allies

  • Amy "Doc" Cross: A slightly mad genius who works freelance tech support for various corporations. She has allied herself with Ranaman, building his gadgets. She constructed his Power Gauntlets, Goggles, and Body Armor. Unbeknownst to the world, she operates out of her secret laboratory that was once a "Happy Pals" pet store. Only Ranaman knows the truth.
  • Perrita: A 19-month-old American Eskimo Dog. She was a stray that Val discovered almost dead outside his building. He rescued her and now she lives with him, the only living soul to know that Val Vargas and Ranaman are one and the same. Being a dog, she can't tell anyone so it seems to work out fine.
  • Elida "Ellie" Amaru: Val's Peruvian neighbor and friend. She lives with her older sister and works as a waitress at a nearby Mexican restaurant. She often looks after Perrita when Val's off at his "other job". Wishes their friendship would develop into something more.
  • Mr. Stevens: Val's boss and landlord. An angry, unpleasant man, he hired Val as his "off the books" superintendent, offering him a rent discount on his apartment. Val’s room was the one with the exposed dumbwaiter shaft, but he neglected to mention that when the arrangement was made. Luckily for Val, that suited him just fine.

Enemies

  • Nathaniel Bass: A career criminal and a notorious killer, Nathaniel Bass became infamous in the underworld after what became known as the Gren Hall Massacre, in which he executed every policeman he blamed for his previous incarceration. He was arrested again after Ranaman thwarted his kidnapping of Sarah Furler in Issue 2.[3]
  • Legion: Carter Mason. Convicted killer and robber. His belt generates innumerable clones made of "hard light" energy. Each one is an extension of his mind, allowing him to be each clone simultaneously. He was defeated at the end of Arc 1, Issue 5.[4]
  • Professor Arma: A mechanical genius who is responsible for the duplicator belt Legion uses.
  • Doctor Pleasant: Head psychologist and surgeon at the Umbra Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Deeply concerned about appearances.
  • Showman: William Henry Baxter, a psychotic performer. Makes his killings and acts of terrorism into theater and public performances. He is the central villain of Arc 2, "The Greatest Showman".
