Randon Fontenette (born July 5th, 2005)[1] is an American college football linebacker/safety for the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Early life and high school.
Fontenette was born on July 5th, 2005, in Freeport, Texas. Fontenette was a 4-star recruit coming out of Brazosport High School.[2] In high school, he played both quarterback and safety. [3] During his sophomore season, he recorded 81 tackles and 3 pass breakups, garnering him a Texas 12-4A D-I Unanimous First-Team All-District Selection at safety.[3][4]During his junior season, he threw for 1,440 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, while rushing for 1,066 yards and 12 touchdowns with 6.5 yards per carry, and was named Texas District 12-4A D-I Offensive MVP.[4] On defense, he recorded 32 tackles, one tackle for loss, two interceptions, and one forced fumble.[4]During his senior season, he recorded 1,000 passing yards, nine passing touchdowns, seven interceptions, 1,024 rushing yards, 14 rushing touchdowns, on 5.3 yards per carry.[4] On defense, he had 82 tackles, one tackle for loss, four interceptions, one fumble recovered, and one blocked kick.[4] He also played basketball and was a member of the track team.[5]
In July 2022, Fontenette committed to Utah.[6] He de-committed on November 3rd, 2022, after visiting TCU.[7]On December 16th, 2022, he committed to TCU over Vanderbilt, USC, Texas Tech, and Purdue.[8]
College career
In 2023, Fontenette began his freshman season with TCU. Fontanette began the season playing mainly on special downs, but began to see more playing time on defense as the season progressed.[9]He played in all 12 games, recording 16 tackles.[10][8] On December 5th, 2023, he entered the transfer portal.[9]On December 7th, 2023, Fontenette transferred to Vanderbilt.[2]
In 2024, Fontenette was Vanderbilt's primary STAR, a linebacker/safety combination used by Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea.[10] In Vanderbilt's Upset Win Over #1 Alabama, Fontenette had a 29-yard-pick six.[8] He finished the season with 72 total tackles, 41 solo tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and one interception.[10][11]
Prior to the start of the 2025 season, Fontenette was named to the watchlist for the East-West Shrine Bowl Game.[12] In 2025, Fontenette was named a team captain.[13]
