Raneem Al-Afifi
Raneem Al-Afifi is an Egyptian feminist journalist and specialized trainer in gender-sensitive media and feminist film analysis.
She is well-known for being the founder of the first Egyptian digital feminist media project, ولها وجوه أخرى - Wlaha Wogoh Okhra[1] (in English: She Has Other Faces), which she established in the aftermath of the Egyptian uprising in 2011.[2] Her project is considered by prominent Egyptian feminists an important phase in the history of Egyptian feminist journalism.[3]
Raneem studied journalism and graduated from Cairo University right before the protests took over Egypt in January 2011. She joined the protests that took place in Tahrir Square and led to the toppling of the Egyptian autocratic government led by 30-year dictator Hosni Mubarak. As a freelance journalist, she witnessed physical attacks and sexual harassment targeting women protesters and reported on some of these incidents. Her first encounter with the feminist movement was volunteering with some newly established feminist groups to document sexual assault cases against Egyptian women.[4] Her activism in this period paved the way for her to widely promote the concept of "feminist journalism" by launching an independent feminist media project (called ولها وجوه أخرى - Wlaha Wogoh Okhra) in 2013, which was the first online feminist media in Egypt at that time.[5]
After a few years of focusing solely on producing media content and scaling up the project,[6] she moved to a new phase in her activism toward promoting and expanding the base of "digital feminist journalism" by conducting workshops on gender-sensitive reporting, which led to gaining a solid reputation in this regard. As a result, Raneem gained recognition from national and international organizations[7] that invited her to train young journalists on the basics of gender-sensitive and inclusive journalism.[8]
As part of her efforts to promote the principles of feminist journalism, Raneem penned two guidebooks aimed at Arabic-speaking journalists that focus on reporting from a gender-sensitive perspective: Basics of Gender-Sensitive Journalism[9] and Gender-Sensitive Reporting on Health Crises. She is also the author of e-book called Women's Portrayal in Egyptian Film Posters.[10]
Raneem is a bilingual journalist who produces media content in Arabic and English and contributes articles, videos,[11] and podcasts[12] to a wide array of platforms and magazines that target both Arabic-speaking and English-speaking audiences.
