Rathindran R Prasad is an Indian film director, writer and producer working mainly in Tamil cinema.

Early Life[edit]

Rathindran R Prasad was born on July 9, 1981, in Coimbatore, India. His father, Rajendra Prasad, a doctor who was doing voluntary health services in tribal villages and small hamlets specialising in eradication of leprosy. Due to this, he was required to constantly travel inturn making Rathindran move with him staying in various places such as Raani, Mannarkad and Kottayam experiencing multicultural and multireligious lifestyle,. At Age 10, they settled in Coimbatore and from 1991 to 1996 where he did his schooling in RVS Matriculation School, Chennai.

At the age of 17, he started his career in movies. After working in an multimedia company as a creative head, he shifted to an advertising production house and for the next 4 years, he worked in more than 300 advertising films. This trial by fire where he had to constantly work on short cycles of conception, planning and execution improved my understanding of the Filmmaking process and strengthened his technical acumen.

Early film Career[edit]

He worked as an Associate director in his friend, Sargunam's film Kalavani which went on to become one of the best films of 2010. Following this he worked as an creative producer with A. Sargunam next film, Vaagai Sooda Vaa which won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil for 2012.

Swayer Corporation[edit]

In 2015, he made a high concept 30-minute Socio-thriller called Swayer Corporation. The film went on to get selected in Court Metrage category in the prestigious Cannes film festival and also in several other prestigious film festivals across the globe, winning many of them.

Kodaikanal Won’t[edit]

In the late 2015, He collaborated with rapper Sofia Ashraf to make a music video highlighting a huge environmental crime committed by Unilever by dumping mercury in the surroundings of their thermometer factory in Kodaikanal. The song titled “Kodaikanal Won’t”, which sampled rapper Nicki Minaj’s song Anaconda became wildly popular garnering million views. Reportedly, more than 1,50,000 people from over 190 countries — including Hollywood, Bollywood and K’town celebrities like Niki Minaj, Ashton Kutcher, Mark Ruffalo, Guy Kawasaki, Shekhar Kapur and Nandita Das— supported and endorsed the cause the video stood for. Soon after the issue was brought into the limelight, Unilever compensated the families affected by this.

Chennai Poromboke Paadal[edit]

After the enormous success of ‘’Kodaikanal Won’t, He collaborated with Carnatic maestro and Ramon Magsaysay award winner T. M. Krishna to make a music video titled “Chennai Poromboke Paadal” highlighting the dumping of toxic flyash in the Ennore creek by TANGEDCO. The music video garnered praise for revolutionising classical Carnatic music with the usage of common lingo of Tamil in Chennai thus bringing in a lot of attention to the issue.

Navarasa - Inmai[edit]

Following “Boomika“ he wrote and directed one of the nine Segments of the Netflix original web series, Navarasa producced by Director Mani Ratnam and Jayendra Panchapakesan titled “INMAI” starring Siddharth and Parvathy Thiruvothu. Upon its release, Inmai was considered one of the standout segment of Navarasa by many media outlets particularly praising the screenplay, acting and music composed by Vishal Bhardwaj.

Idhu Vedhaalam Sollum Kathai[edit]

In the year 2016, Rathindran wrote and directed his first feature Tamil film “Idhu Vedhaalam sollum kathai“ starring Aishwarya Rajesh, Guru Somasundaram and Ashwin Kakumanu and produced by a Turkish producer Basak Gaziler Prasad in association with Bollywood actor/producer Abhay Deol, who also played a key character in the film. Roberto Zazzara, an Italian cinematographer handled the cinematography and music director Ghibran handled the composition. The principle photography of the film began in August 2016 and concluded in June 2017. The film awaiting its release.

Boomika[edit]

After “Idhu Vedhalam Sollum Kadhai“, he went on to write and direct his second feature titled “Boomika” starring Aishwarya rajesh, Pavel Navageethan and produced by Stone Bench Films and Passion Studios.[1] The film premiered on Netflix on August 23rd, 2021 to good response particularly praising the filmmaking techniques. The film was also unanimously praised for its message about Environmental Conservation. Speaking about this film, Rathindran has mentioned that the idea of this film was conceived in the 2000s when he was doing solitary farming in Auroville.

Personal Life[edit]

He is married to Basak Gaziler, a film producer from turkey whom he met during a visit in London.
