Ratzfert (Yiddish: ראצפערט‎) is a Hasidic dynasty from the Sanz family. The founder of the dynasty was Rabbi Shalom Eliezer Halberstam, the son of Rabbi Chaim Halberstam of Sanz.

Rabbi Shalom Eliezer Halberstam[edit]

Rabbi Shalom Eliezer Halberstam of Ratzfert (1862 - 1944) was the sixth son of Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, founder of the Sanz dynasty, and was the founder of the Ratzfert dynasty. He perished in Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Biography[edit]

He was born on Chol HaMoed Pesach 5622 to Rabbi Chaim of Sanz and to Rachel Dvora, the granddaughter of Rabbi Mordechai David Unger, the Rebbe of Dombrov. He was named after Rabbi Sholom of Belz and of Rabbi Eliezer of Dzikov.

In Elul, 1875, he married the daughter of his brother-in-law Rabbi Mordechai Dov Twersky of Hornosteipel and moved to live in her parents' residence in Russia. After a while he returned to Galicia after being deported by the authorities together with other foreign residents. He moved to the city of Sieniawa near his brother, and after a while moved to the city of Tarnów. In 1900 he moved to Hungary where he stayed for six months, then moved to Ratzfert, the city of which he is known, during the Holocaust he was in the ghettos of Nyíregyháza and Ariu-Lappesh. He was murdered in Birkenau.
