RauhRacing is a German motorsport team founded by brothers Felix (23) and Filip (28) Rauh. Registered as "RauhRacing UG (haftungsbeschränkt)" in Frankfurt am Main, the team focuses on transforming unconventional vehicles into race cars. Their primary project involves converting a Renault Twingo for competition in the Nürburgring 24 Hours endurance race.[1][2][3][4][5]

History

RauhRacing was established by brothers Felix (23) and Filip (28) Rauh and registered on October 30, 2024, with the Frankfurt am Main district court (registration number HRB 136488). The company was founded with initial capital of €1,000, with Felix Rauh serving as managing director.[6]

The concept originated during a motorcycle trip to France, where the brothers spotted a Renault Twingo near Bordeaux and discussed racing such an unlikely vehicle at the Nürburgring.[2][4] This conversation led to the formation of RauhRacing and their first major project.

Projects

Renault Twingo 24 Hours Nürburgring

RauhRacing's flagship project involves converting a 1995 Renault Twingo into a race car for the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. The team purchased the green Twingo (in the "Coriander green" color) for approximately €1,000 with around 67,000 kilometers on the odometer in July 2024.[2][3][4][5]

The brothers affectionately nicknamed their Twingo "Laubfrosch" (tree frog), a playful reference to the car's green color and small size, while the overall project is called "Project Twingoat."[3][4][5] The first-generation Twingo was designed as a small city car with a 1.2-liter engine producing only 54 horsepower, making it an unconventional choice for endurance racing.[1][2]

Key modifications include:

  • Replacing the original 1.2-liter D7F engine with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder F4R 730 engine from a Renault Clio II RS[3][4][5]
  • Upgrading to approximately 169-200 horsepower (though the engine could produce up to 240 hp, the team opted for lower output to improve reliability)[3][5]
  • Installing the Clio's transmission, drivetrain, and braking system[2][3][4][5]
  • Upgrading from 13-inch to 15-inch wheels[5]
  • Adding an 80-liter FIA-approved safety fuel tank[3]
  • Installing an FIA-approved Roll cage, racing seats, and HANS head and neck protection system[3][4][5]
  • Reducing the weight to approximately 850-900 kg (dry weight)[3][5]
  • Adding aerodynamic modifications including a rear wing[4]

The engine swap and mechanical modifications began in December 2024.[3][5] As of February 2025, the team had installed the engine, axle sleeves, wheels, and the Clio Sport's braking system, with the custom safety cell and suspension system next in the build process.[5] The estimated cost for all modifications is approximately €50,000.[3]

RauhRacing plans to debut the Twingo at the 2026 24 Hours Nürburgring race.[1][2][3] To qualify for the 24 Hours race, the team must first participate in other NLS Series (endurance) races. For this purpose, they are using a BMW 330d Touring (E46) until the Twingo is race-ready.[5]

The Nürburgring 24 Hours regulations allow for such an unconventional entry, stipulating only that cars must use engines from the same manufacturer as the original vehicle.[4][5]

Future Projects

RauhRacing has announced plans for additional unconventional race car projects after the Twingo, including a Corvette C5, a BMW inspired by Need for Speed Most Wanted, and a modified Mazda Miata.[2][7]

Philosophy

RauhRacing describes their approach as "turning unlikely heroes into racecars."[7] The team emphasizes creativity in motorsport rather than following conventional approaches, operating under the principle that "any car can be for the track" and that conventional cars are boring.[4][7] Their goal is to "compete at the 24 Hours Nürburgring, create engaging content, and build a community that appreciates unconventional racing."[7]

Community Engagement

The team maintains an active social media presence, particularly on Instagram, where they document their build process and engage with followers.[5][7] They have established a community of supporters interested in their approach to motorsport, including volunteer technical assistance from certified Renault technicians and donations from enthusiasts.[2][4]

RauhRacing also operates a motorsport fashion line, with proceeds supporting their racing operations.[7]

Reception

The announcement of RauhRacing's Twingo project received coverage from automotive publications including Autobild Klassik, Car Throttle, The Drive, and international outlets in Portugal and Spain.[1][2][3][4][5] Journalists have noted the ambitious nature of the project, with The Drive describing it as "a David and Goliath story in the making" given the challenges of competing in such a demanding race with a modified city car.[2]

The project has drawn comparisons to other unconventional entries in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, such as a team that has raced an Opel Manta for decades and another that demonstrated a Dacia Logan could compete in the event.[4]
