Development
Ravendawn was in development from at least 2016.[1] According to Tavernlight CEO Nicolas Schrik, Ravendawn was heavily inspired by Ultima Online and Tibia, which is reflected in the game's top-down visual perspective and combat mechanics.[1] An open beta in early 2023 drew more than 45,000 unique players over a month.[1]
Ravendawn is a distinct title from RavenQuest, a separate game developed by Tavernlight Games that incorporates blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens. The two games share core content updates but address separate player communities.[2]
Gameplay
Ravendawn uses a classless archetype system. Players select three archetypes from a pool of eight, combining active and passive skills from each to build a customized character. With twelve active and six passive skills per archetype, the system allows a large range of combinations.[1]
While sharing a top-down visual style with Tibia, Ravendawn differs significantly in gameplay design; it has been compared to sandbox MMORPGs such as ArcheAge, featuring open-world housing and farming, a deep profession and crafting system, and a tradepack system through which players produce and transport goods across the world for profit.[3] Open-world player versus player combat creates risk on longer trade routes.[1] Ravendawn also includes open-world player housing, a political system, and fishing.[4]
Release
Ravendawn launched on January 16, 2024, for Microsoft Windows as a free-to-play title with an optional paid Patron subscription offering cosmetic benefits.[3][4]
Tavernlight Games reported that player populations on the Serafine and Angerhorn servers approached maximum capacity in the days following launch, and that the game accumulated over 1.2 million unique Twitch viewers and 1.5 million hours watched within its first six days.[5] Server lag was reported shortly after launch and subsequently addressed by the development team.[5]
In January 2025, Tavernlight Games announced the integration of BattleEye anti-cheat software into Ravendawn, describing it as providing "an additional layer of protection" against cheating in the game.[6]
Reception
Writing for Massively Overpowered's "Fight or Kite" column, Sam Kash reviewed Ravendawn in February 2024. The review praised the archetype system, describing the ability to freely combine three archetypes as a significant strength of the game's design. The review also noted that animations and combat were "kind of rough," citing inconsistencies in the game's visual polish, such as the presence of tree-chopping animations alongside missing basic gathering animations, while noting the issues were not severe enough to discourage continued play[7]
MMORPG.com's open beta preview described the game as being "in a good state" and "definitely one to keep an eye on," highlighting its class flexibility and crafting system.[1]
