Ravi Savarirayan
Professor Ravi Savarirayan is an Australian interventional clinical geneticist and Professor of Human (Clinical) Genetics at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He is a leading figure in interventional genetics for skeletal dysplasia, serving as the global lead investigator on the clinical trial programs that are investigating precision therapies for achondroplasia, including vosoritide, navepegritide, infigratinib, and dabogratinib.
Education and Career
Savarirayan received his MBBS from the University of Adelaide in 1990, became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1997, and received an MD from the University of Melbourne in 2004. He subsequently joined the Murdoch Children's Research Institute, where he is now Professor of Human (Clinical) Genetics and Group Leader of the Molecular Therapies research group within MCRI's Genomic Medicine research area. Alongside this, he holds a Professorial Fellowship at the University of Melbourne, works as a consultant clinical geneticist at Victorian Clinical Genetics Services (VCGS), and is a pediatrician at The Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne.
Savarirayan has held leadership roles in organizations concerned with skeletal dysplasia. He served as president of the International Skeletal Dysplasia Society, was a founding member of the Skeletal Dysplasia Management Consortium, and founded the Society for Interventional Genetics, an organization established to support precision-medicine approaches for rare genetic conditions and training in interventional genetics.
Research
Savarirayan's research centers on inherited disorders of the skeleton, particularly skeletal dysplasia conditions that cause disproportionate short stature, joint disease, and osteoporosis. His group's work spans basic and translational research into the genetic and molecular basis of these conditions through to their clinical management and the design and conduct of international clinical trials examining both growth outcomes and the longer-term health outcomes and complications associated with mechanism-based treatments for achondroplasia.
Much of his research has focused on achondroplasia and related FGFR3-associated skeletal dysplasia. He led international consensus efforts to standardize diagnosis, care, and treatment of skeletal dysplasia conditions, including first authorship of an international consensus statement on the diagnosis, multidisciplinary management, and lifelong care of people with achondroplasia[1], developed with the participation of 55 international experts and patient representatives. One of his most prominent research contributions has been leading the clinical trial programs for four precision therapies for achondroplasia: vosoritide[2][3][4][5], navepegritide[6][7], infigratinib[8][9], and dabogratinib. As of 2026, he has authored or co-authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and collaborated with researchers across roughly 44 countries[10][11][12].
Service and Health Equity Work
Outside his academic work, Savarirayan is a co-founder of Yatra Foundation Australia, which supports education and community-welfare initiatives for disadvantaged children in rural and remote areas of India. His health-services research has also examined disparities in access to culturally safe clinical-genetics services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. He has publicly advocated broader access to treatments for skeletal dysplasia, including through publicly funded health systems, and has led international guidance intended to support consistent implementation of care across different countries.
Awards
