Rawan Yaghi
Rawan Yaghi (Arabic: روان ياغي) is a Palestinian writer (born 1994) living in the Gaza Strip[1]. Her family originates from Al Masmiyya Al Kabira (Arabic: المسمية الكبيرة), a Palestinian village in northern Gaza that was depopulated by Israeli forces in 1948[2][3].
Early Life and Education
Yaghi participated in the Qattan Centre for the Child, an education and culture organization in Gaza, where she developed her work as a writer, leading to the creation of her blog. She began a degree in English Literature at the Islamic University of Gaza, studying writing and language. She pursued an undergraduate degree in Linguistics and Italian at the University of Oxford where she was awarded the Junior Members’ Scholarship by the University's Jesus College. She was also awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism in New York[4][5].
Career
Yaghi contributed to the Gaza Writes Back anthology in 2014. In 2019, her short story Commonplace was published in the Palestine +100 anthology, edited by Basma Ghalayini[6].
In 2020, she participated in the inaugural digital Palestine Writes Festival of Literature by speaking on the panel SciFi Palestine alongside writers Ibtisam Azem, Saleem Haddad, and Ebony Coletu. Their discussion was about the science fiction literary genre and 'Emergent Strategy', a sci-fi social justice model that has developed since 2014[7].
To date Yaghi has written for The Link, The New York Times, and Mondoweiss[8].
