Since he was introduced in the 1995 game with the same name, Rayman has been featured in every games of the series and also appears in other games such as the Super Smash Bros. series and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope.

Rayman is an anthropomorphic limbless protagonist with the ability to use his hair as helicopter blades and punch at a distance. He was created by Betilla the Fairy and she assists him on a quest. Rayman was the first character created by Ubisoft and Ancel noted that Rayman's creation was "very simple." He was named after a ray tracing software. He was originally designed to have limbs, except that due of technically problems. Rayman was one of the most beloved video game characters from France. He also has became Ubisoft's most well known and beloved character and it's mascot.

Concept and creation[edit]

Rayman was created and designed by French developer Michel Ancel and was Ubisoft's first original character.[2][3] Ancel noted that "the creation of Rayman was very simple." Ancel first drew Rayman at the age of 20.[4] Ancel later returned to those early sketches in 1992 to create a demo for French software developer Lankhor. Ancel later met up with Nicolas Choukroun in Montpellier and began creating his games' visuals.[5] For Lankhor, Ancel's first game idea was Mechanic Warriors.[6]

As a result of his research into character animation, Ancel became interested in the computer graphics technique of ray tracing.[7] During development, Ancel cited Celtic, Chinese and Russian fairy tales as major sources of inspiration.[5] The character was named after a ray tracing software which Ubisoft used for the original game.[8]

Rayman originally had limbs, which was one of his major characteristics. When the developer tried to install the game on the systems, it did not work properly, leaving him with a floating body on the screen.[9] At the time, there wasn't enough processing power to render everything which made it technically impossible to display this character with animated limbs.[10][11] The creative answer was to create the character without limbs.[11] As a result of the worldwide success of the character after the first game was released, Ubisoft gained their first growth.[12]

Characteristics[edit]

Rayman is an anthropomorphic human/eggplant hybrid or “thingamajig” who is limbless in which he can use his hair as helicopter blades means of transportation which trademark as "hairlicopter"[lower-alpha 1] and punch at a distance.[13][14] His personality was an adventurer with a sense of humor inspired by Indiana Jones. Rayman is defined not by his appearance or any traits of individuality of autonomy instead, by his ability.[15] In some games, Rayman can project balls of energy from his hands. He wears white gloves, a red neckerchief on his eggplant body with a white ring in the center and yellow trainers.

Rayman began hus adventure captured aboard the prison ship and must escape there.[18] After escaping, Rayman must travel across different lands, collecting lums and powers up his fists.[19][20] Rayman also appeared in the animated series Rayman: The Animated Series.[21]

However, their snoring disturbed an old granny from the Land of the Livid Dead who retaliated by sending an evil army of disgusting creatures across the world to get revenge.[23] The evil army must be found and Rayman must imprison his mother, Betilla the Nymph, as well as her sisters.[24] In Rayman Legends, Rayman and his friends have been asleep for one century. Rayman and his friend are awakened by Murfy who tells them about the bad news. Rayman and his friends set out to defeat these new threats and dark teensies.[25] For Wii U version, Satoru Iwata announced that players will be able to dress up Rayman as Mario alongside Globox as Luigi.[26]
