Nabil Amadu (born March 5, 1990) known by his stage name Rayoe (formerly Bils Rayoe), is a Ghanaian rapper and hip hop musician.[1] He gained popularity as a dominant teen rapper in the late 2000s among high schools and colleges in Accra, Ghana.[2] Rayoe began his music career professionally in 2007 as part of "Souljas Inn", a group he founded which included Ghanaian Singer Chase Forever and other members.[3] The group released their debut mixtape, "Crunch Time," in the same year, although it made limited impact locally. In 2009, "Souljas Inn" collaborated with renowned Ghanaian music producer Richie Mensah of Lynx Entertainment to release the song "One Day," which received extensive airplay on various radio stations in Ghana and was featured in several movies.[2] That year, Rayoe also had a song featuring Senegalese-American singer Akon titled "Tables Turn," which also included singer St. Kelly.[4] However, in 2012, "Souljas Inn" disbanded as Rayoe decided to relocate to Los Angeles, California to pursue new opportunities.[3]

Early life and Education

Rayoe was born on March 5, 1990, in Accra, Ghana, to a middle-class Dagomba family with religious and well-educated parents.[1] During his formative years, he split his time between Accra, Ghana, and Harlem, New York City, where he was exposed to hip hop music in diverse cultural environments. These experiences ignited his passion for rapping.[5] He attended Achimota High School, where he gained notoriety as a rapper through performances at various high schools and colleges in Ghana.[2] After completing high school, Rayoe moved to the United States to seek greener pastures. However, during this period, he faced legal issues related to drug trafficking.[6]

Legal Issues

Rayoe encountered legal troubles when he was accused of attempting to smuggle over $150,000 worth of heroin. The case attracted attention due to the existence of rap lyrics on Rayoe's iPhone, in which he boasted about his exploits as a courier. Despite the potentially incriminating evidence, a Brooklyn jury acquitted him, swayed by the defense's argument that he was unknowingly carrying the luggage as a favor for a friend and had no knowledge of the drugs inside. The jury found that the prosecution's case had significant gaps, highlighting the lack of direct evidence linking Rayoe to the crime. Rayoe maintained his innocence throughout the trial, acknowledging that he had exercised poor judgment but insisting that he was unaware of the contents of the bag. Following his acquittal, Rayoe's family expressed relief, emphasizing the need for him to change his circle of friends and heed parental guidance.[6]
