The Real Stadium Club Ovetense, or simply Stadium Ovetense, was a Spanish football club from the city of Oviedo, founded in 1914 and dissolved in 1926 after merging with the other existing club in the city, Real Club Deportivo Oviedo, to form Real Oviedo. It was considered the team of the city's working class, in contrast to Real Club Deportivo Oviedo, which represented the wealthy classes.

History

After its founding, the club competed in the Asturian Regional Championship, winning the title in the 1924–25 season. This was the first time a team from the city of Oviedo had achieved this feat, following eight seasons of Sporting de Gijón's dominance since the competition's inception.

The championship-winning team's lineup was led by goalkeeper Óscar Álvarez, Ricardo Zamora's long-time backup for the Spanish national team, and included Mariscal, Trucha; Justo, Julio Alonso, Vigón; Montalbán, "Tiesu", Paladini, Barril, and Servando. This starting eleven was made up entirely of Asturian players, and all but three were born in Oviedo.

This success earned them the right to participate in the 1925 Copa del Rey, the national competition of the time. They played in the quarter-final group stage alongside Celta de Vigo and Club Deportivo Español of Valladolid, being eliminated after a record of 1 win, 1 draw, and 2 losses.

In the following season, the 1925–26 Asturian Regional Championship, Stadium Ovetense's third-place finish and Deportivo Oviedo's disappointing performance in the regional championship led to a merger of the two clubs with the aim of forming a more powerful team capable of dominating regional football, and more specifically, Sporting de Gijón. Following mediation by Óscar Álvarez, the boards of directors of both clubs met on March 14th to establish the terms of the agreement. They met again on March 26th to give their final agreement, a date considered the founding date of the new club, and the merger agreement was finally signed on April 26, 1926.

An interesting fact related to this club is that Santiago Bernabéu, the former president of Real Madrid, played for Stadium Ovetense for a few weeks during the summer of 1921 due to a work-related move to Oviedo. He even played in some friendly matches and officiated a game between the Basque Country national team and Deportivo Oviedo.

He wore a blue and yellow or black and yellow striped shirt and black shorts.

Stadiums

• Llamaquique Maneuvering Field: Used since the first matches played in Oviedo at the beginning of the 20th century.

• Vetusta: Located in the Fozaneldi neighborhood. It was inaugurated on September 23, 1923, with a match between Stadium Ovetense and Racing Club de Madrid, which ended 0–2. It fell into disuse after the merger and disappeared after the Spanish Civil War.

Players

• Óscar Álvarez. Goalkeeper. He was called up to the Spanish national football team, as Ricardo Zamora's backup, nine times while playing for Stadium Ovetense and twice while playing for Real Oviedo. As such, he was present at the 1924 Paris Olympics, although he did not make his debut. While playing for Real Oviedo, he also achieved the distinction of being the goalkeeper with the fewest goals conceded in the Spanish Second Division during the 1931-32 and 1932-33 seasons.

• Ulpiano Villazón. Midfielder. He was called up to the Spanish national football team while playing for Stadium, but never made his debut.
