Really Rad Records is an American independent record label based in Portland, Oregon. Really Rad was founded by Garyt Smith and Zach Galland in 2014 and has released records by artists including Remo Drive, Pictures of Vernon, SeeYouSpaceCowboy and more. They have released free samplers and compilation albums via their Bandcamp page on a number of occasions.[1][2][3] Really Rad Records is one of the many independent record labels to ride the wave of renewed interest in cassette tape and vinyl record sales.

History[edit]

2014–2018[edit]

Really Rad began operation in Yakima, Washington, out of the respective bedrooms of founders Garyt Smith and Zach Galland, releasing only limited runs of handmade cassette tapes and CDs for artists such as Pictures of Vernon, Dowager, and Florals. In August 2015, Really Rad was profiled by local newspaper Yakima Herald-Republic.[4]

In November 2015, Really Rad released its first 7" record for a then still relatively unknown band called Remo Drive.[5] The success of the single earned the label enough revenue to release a 12" record for the band Troubled Minds. With the label making money for the first time, Really Rad was able to invest in higher quality cassette and CD releases. Galland left Really Rad Records in 2016, and Smith continued to operate as the company's sole owner and A&R representative.

In 2017 and 2018, Really Rad continued releasing records from bands like Outlier, Winnebago Vacation, SeeYouSpaceCowboy and more. After adding over 40 releases to their catalog, Really Rad temporarily shut down at the end of 2018.

2020–present[edit]

After relocating to Bend, Oregon at the end of 2019 and discovering Terminal Crush,[6] a new project from No Sleep Records artist Grey Gordon,[7][8] Really Rad Records re-opened for submissions once again. The label operated out of a small apartment throughout the entirety of the COVID-19 pandemic, releasing projects from artists like Dosser,[9] Avec Plaisir,[10] Nobody's Flowers,[11][12] and Summerhead,[13][14] an experimental Trip hop tinged Shoegaze supergroup made up from members of Trash Talk, Exmags, The Mongoloids, Cobrayama, and more. In November 2021, the label relocated again to Portland, Oregon.
