Rebecca Janowitz (born October 29, 1953) is an American lawyer, public official, and candidate for Chicago City Council, running in the 43rd Ward. The 43rd Ward primarily includes the Lincoln Park neighborhood and parts of the Near North Side of the City.

Background

Education and early years

In 1973, Janowitz received a Bachelor of Arts in History from University of Sussex in Falmer, England, and she earned a Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University Chicago Law School in 1976. Shortly after graduating from law school, Janowitz joined South Dakota Legal Services as a Staff Attorney, where she represented indigent Native Americans in State, Federal, and Tribal Courts. While at the SDLS, Janowitz worked as an attorney in the case of Innocent Victims of the Occupation of Wounded Knee v. the United States Government. She also worked to reopen the Legal Services Office of the Pine Ridge Reservation after it was closed due to political strife.

Legal Practice and Office of Toni Preckwinkle

After leaving the SDLS in 1979, she became a partner at the law firm of Pecquet and Janowitz, where she represented numerous clients, including multiple small businesses and nonprofit organizations, until 1995. Afterwards, she left her legal practice to become the special assistant to Cook County Board President and former Alderman Toni Preckwinkle. During her time as Special assistant, Janowitz served in a coalition to curb abusive payday lending. She was also a part of the opposition to the demolition of numerous historic buildings and affordable housing in the Chicago area.

Chicago Public School System

Janowitz left Preckwinkle's office in 2001, and soon after joined the Chicago Public School system as a Coordinator for Special Projects for the CEO. At CPS, Janowitz, among other things, led a successful Transition Advisory Council for Wells-Maddon area residents advising on University of Chicago Charter School. She was also involved in providing staff support in the aftermath of school closings and the neighborhood transformations of the Chicago Housing Authority.
