History[edit]
During the 1920s, Reutter supplied a majority of car manufacturers with their seats.[7] The sale of bodywork production business heralded a new chapter in the company´s history – with a core focus on seats. With a play on the words REutter and CAROsserie, seat specialist RECARO was born in 1963.[8] In October 1906, Willhelm Reutter was a 32-year-old master saddler and recognized a rapidly growing automobile industry, so he founded “Stuttgarter Carosserie- u. Radfabrik” in Stuttgart, Germany.[9]
In 1967, RECARO invested in a new site in Schwäbisch Hall. In 1971, the first aircraft seats were introduced under the brand name “RECARO Aircomfort” after being under license from the American company Hardman Aerospace. In 1974, the company received its first major international order from Korean Airlines. In 1983, the independent companies of Keiper and RECARO merged to form Keiper RECARO GmbH. Aircraft seat production was wholly transferred to Schwäbisch Hall and expanded under the Keiper RECARO Aircraft Seating Division name and the RECARO Aircomfort brand.
On January 1, 1997, the joint venture divided into its individual industries. Keiper RECARO GmbH became the Keiper RECARO Group with four independent companies, including RECARO GmbH & Co.KG in the automotive sector and RECARO Aircraft Seating GmbH &Co. KG. In 2011, the automotive business was sold to Johnson Controls. RECARO Automotive Seating is now part of the US supplier Adient. In 2012, The RECARO holding company moved Kaiserslautern back to Stuttgart, the city of its founding. Today, RECARO Aircraft Seating is growing at a rate of 10%.[10]
