Red Rock was a town in Marion County, Iowa located along the Des Moines River, which was abandoned ahead of the construction of the Red Rock Dam which caused the area to be flooded by Lake Red Rock. It is the namesake of both of the features as well as the encompassing Red Rock Township.
History
The area was used by Indians as a trail along the Des Moines who knew it as sic-ella-musk-a chees, which translates to red stone, named after the red sandstone found along the bluffs in the area. The area was first permanently settled on May 1, 1843, by John D. Bedell. In August 1845 the area was surveyed into a town named Red Rock.
In 1851 the area was flooded by several feet for multiple weeks, leading to the destruction of multiple buildings.
The area was known to be somewhat lawless. The area saw significant traffic along the trail which led to many taverns opening, serving citizens and Native Americans alike. Drinking was so much a part of the culture that a local teetotaler was threatened to be drowned unless he supplied whiskey to the school. Over the years, there were multiple murders and brawls in the town.
