The Redfish API is an open industry standard specification and schema designed to meet the expectations of end users for simple, modern, and secure management of scalable platform hardware.:[1]

Overview[edit]

Both human readable and machine capable, Redfish leverages common Internet and web services standards to expose information directly to the modern tool chain. Redfish specifies a RESTful interface and utilizes JSON and OData to help customers integrate solutions within their existing tool chains.

History[edit]

The first release of Redfish in September, 2015 focused on server management[2] and was a secure, multi-node capable replacement for previous interfaces, such as Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI)[3]-over-LAN.

The DMTF delivers subsequent releases every four months to expand the scope to the rest of the IT infrastructure. To design releases, the DMTF works with:

  • The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA)[4] to cover more advanced storage. For example, SNIA Swordfish™[5].
  • The Green Grid[6] and ASHRAE[7] to cover power and cooling for facilities.
  • Work with the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)[8] to cover some level of ethernet switching.

Scope and Goals[edit]

The DMTF's Scalable Platforms Management Forum (SPMF), now known as the Redfish Forum, designed the Redfish API with these goals in mind[9]

  • An open industry standard specification and schema that meets the expectations of end users for simple, modern and secure management of scalable platform hardware.
  • RESTful interface over HTTPS in JSON format based on OData v4.
  • Usable by client applications and browser-based GUIs.
  • A secure, multi-node capable replacement for previous interfaces.
  • Schema-backed human-readable output.
  • Covers popular use cases and customer requirements.
  • Intended to meet OCP remote machine management[10] requirements.
