Redkey USB is a secure data erasure utility created by Redkey USB Ltd. It is sold as a bootable live USB drive from which the Redkey software can be used on a perpetual license basis.
History[edit]
The application was first released in August 2018 following a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign.[1] Its features and design were partly based on the feedback of the project's supporters who contributed to its development.[2][3]
During 2019, a second Redkey crowdfunding campaign went viral on Indiegogo following a video review by Linus Tech Tips.
In 2020, a third Redkey Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign introduced ATA-based internal erase technology and split the software into three different editions – Home, Professional and Ultimate.
In 2021, Redkey's software received certification from ADISA Certification Limited at Test Level 1 / Assurance Level 3 for SSDs and MHDs. This certification was later elevated to Test Level 2 / Assurance Level 4 after re-certifications in 2022 and 2023.[4][5]
The fourth Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign in 2022 introduced product enhancements, notably a dual USB-C design, the ability to erase data on iOS and Android mobile devices, and remote wiping capabilities.[6][7]
A fifth Kickstarter campaign in 2023 resulted in additional updates, specifically for mobile data erasure, which were also certified by ADISA at Test Level 1 / Assurance Level 3.[8]
Technology and features[edit]
The utility is designed to run on Intel-based x86-64 PCs and Macs. Redkey’s software is written in C++ and uses Linux Debian as a platform.[9] The software utility on the USB erases data on entire drives by overwriting existing data.[10][11] It uses ATA standards to erase hidden areas, such as the DCO and HPA. Other features include unlimited use, reporting, scripting and remote wipe.[12]
Industry Recognition[edit]
2021: Redkey USB Ltd was recognised as a finalist for the "Secure Data and Asset Disposal Company of the Year" at the Computing Security Awards, securing the runner-up position.[13] The same year, the company won the "Global Business Excellence Award 2021" for Outstanding Innovation.
2023: Again a finalist at the Computing Security Awards for the "Secure Data and Asset Disposal Company of the Year", Redkey USB Ltd achieved runner-up status. Additionally, it won the "Security Project of the Year - Private Sector" at the Computing Security Awards for its collaboration with an IT recycling company.[14]
