Reed & Caroline[edit]

Reed & Caroline is an electronic music group based in New York City, NY and Berkeley, CA. The duo was formed by cellist and Buchla enthusiast Reed Hays and vocalist Caroline Schutz.

Background[edit]

Reed Hays and Caroline Schutz met at Oberlin College. Hays joined the college to continue his cello studies, but switched courses to the school's electronic music program in order to use the college's Buchla system. Caroline Schutz was an arts major and went on to become a graphic designer for the Lollapalooza festival before becoming a singer with the bands Folksongs For The Afterlife and The Inner Banks.[1]

After college Hays moved back to New York and worked with Charlie Morrow[2] and Phill Niblock[3], before focussing on writing music for television.[4] During his work for television, Hays collaborated with Caroline Schutz on a track which was used for a L'Oreal commercial.[5]

Hays was introduced to Vince Clarke by a mutual friend at electronic music event in New York in 2015 curated by synth designer Mark Verbos of Verbos Electronics. Following their introduction, Clarke was played the song 'Henry The Worm' and thought that Reed & Caroline would be well suited to the label he had established earlier that year (VeryRecords). Hays then began recording the songs that would become the first Reed & Caroline album, Buchla & Singing which was released in 2016.[6] The duo's second album, Hello Science, was released by VeryRecords in 2018.

Reed & Caroline supported Erasure at all dates on their North American tour in Summer 2018.[7]

Buchla & Singing[edit]

Reed & Caroline's first album, Buchla & Singing was released by VeryRecords label on 14 October 2016.[8]

Hello Science[edit]

Buchla & Singing was followed by their second album for VeryRecords, Hello Science which was released on 6 July 2018. Ben Murphy, writing in Electronic Sound, described Hello Science as "a juxtaposition of unorthodox lyrics and masterful pop arrangements that makes Reed & Caroline such an engaging act. On Hello Science, they've perfected a dark and delicious combination."[9][not in citation given]

In a review of Hello Science by Paul Scott-Bates for the Louder Than War website, Reed & Caroline were to said to "have tapped into the current retro pop market without actually being retro pop. Superbly written songs, catchy and addictive. Wonderful synth effects and a voice that completely captivates. Any fan of synth pop will love this album."[10]

Electronic music website The Electricity Club noted "Hello Science is a much more distinct pop focussed offering [than Buchla & Singing] with songs kept quite short and on point."[11]
