ReefPin is a recreational fishing application for Egypt, developed by BITS Blackrock IT Solutions LLC, a software company based in Alexandria. It is distributed as a progressive web application and covers Egyptian waters including the Red Sea, the Egyptian Mediterranean coast, the Gulf of Suez, the Nile and Lake Nasser.[1]
Overview
ReefPin provides a database of fishing locations, sea condition forecasts, a reference guide to fish species found in Egyptian waters, descriptions of fishing techniques, photograph-based species identification, and a catch logbook. The interface is available in English and Egyptian Arabic.[1]
The application records the legal status of fishing at each location, including areas inside declared marine protected areas where fishing is prohibited.[2]
Regulatory context
In May 2024 the Egyptian authorities suspended recreational sea fishing across the Red Sea, the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba for a five-year period. The Egyptian Mediterranean coast and inland waters are not covered by that suspension. Fishing licences in Egypt are issued under Law 146 of 2021.[3]
Naming
ReefPin is unrelated to reef-pi, an open-source Raspberry Pi-based aquarium controller, and to a coral reef research project of the same name conducted at the University of California, San Diego.
