Refugees from North Korea (Korean War)
During the Korean War, many civilians from North Korea left the country to flee from both the fighting and from communist military forces in the north (People's Volunteer Army and the Korean People's Army).[1][2][3]On 25 June, 1950, North Korean forces lauched an invasion of South Korea. On June 27, 1950, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution that determined North Korea's invasion of South Korea was a "breach of the peace." The UN Security Council called upon North Korean officials to withdraw military forces from South Korea and return north of the 38th parallel. North Korea refused to comply and continued its military invasion, capturing most of South Korea until being halted at Busan. Throughout the war, many North Koreans fled by themselves or alongside UN forces to South Korea or abroad elsewhere. In the winter of 1950, both the UN retreat from Pyongyang and the evacuation of Hungnam featured tens of thousands if not several hundred thousand North Korean refugees fleeing from North Korea. The German state-owned international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle (DW), published an article in 2013 that featured photographs of North Korean refugees during the Korean War. In the article, DW stated that 4.5 million North Koreans left North Korea and fled to either South Korea or to another country.[1]
