History (2017-Present)[edit]
The Beginning (2017)[edit]
Reggae On The Way derives it's name from it's original location on the historic street, South Tacoma Way in Tacoma, WA. Founded in 2017 by long time promoter, Dan "Danno" Rankin and wife, Jessica Rankin. After purchasing the historic Tacoma bar, Airport Tavern, Dan Rankin envisioned a "block party" held right outside their newly renovated business[1]. Utilizing 20+ years of music industry and promoting experience, Rankin turned his vision into a reality. On July 30th, 2017, the inaugural Reggae On The Way festival was held between the 5200 and 5600 blocks of South Tacoma Way. Headlined by Grammy nominated reggae band, Common Kings[2] with supporting artists Anuhea, Ballyhoo! and several local up and coming bands and artists.
The Expansion (2021-2022)[edit]
In 2021, after a brief hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, Reggae On The Way held it's 4th annual show headlined by popular California based band Dirty Heads. Supported by J Boog, Irie Love, and local talents Stay Grounded and Publish The Quest. Following the success of the 2021 show, the need for expansion was clear and the decision was made to not only change the festival location, but also add an additional day of music to meet the demands of the public.[3] [4] The announcement was made that Reggae On The Way 2022 would now be 2-days and held at Haub Family Field.[5] A near 4 acre grass lot outside the world renowned Lemay-America's Car Museum,[6] allowing for a bigger stage and a much larger capacity allowance.
Present Day (2023)[edit]
Since the start of production in 2017, Reggae On The Way has grown exponentially from it's once 2,500 person "block party" to now 7,000+ person (per day), 2-day festival. Hosting some of the biggest names in reggae, ska, reggae rock and hip-hop. Reggae On The Way has also become a name brand, promoting and hosting sell out shows throughout Western Washington for bands like Slightly Stoopid, Pepper, Collie Buddz, and the legendary Stephen Marley. Reggae On The Way 2023 will be held on July 15th-16th headlined by Grammy Nominated band Rebelution and Billboard Chart Topping, Gold Record band Stick Figure.
