Reginald "Regie" A. Tongol is a Filipino lawyer, former news anchor and government official who serves as spokesperson of the Senate Impeachment Court. He was first designated in June 2025 by Senate President Francis Escudero, during the 19th Congress, for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, and was designated again in July 2026 for her second impeachment trial; he is the court's main media contact.[1][2]
Early life and education
Tongol earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Management from Ateneo de Manila University in 2002. He studied law at the same university and passed the Philippine Bar Examination in 2006.[3]
Career
Early career
Tongol began his public service career in 2008 as Political Affairs Officer III for Congresswoman Liwayway Vinzons-Chato at the House of Representatives of the Philippines, serving until 2010.[citation needed] He later joined the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) as Assistant Secretary during the Aquino administration from 2010 to 2011.[3][4]
Media career
From 2011 to 2021, Tongol worked as a news anchor and legal analyst for UNTV, appearing in various news programs and hosting public affairs shows. His work in broadcast media focused on legal and public policy analysis.[2]
Legal practice
In 2021, Tongol established his own law firm, Regie Tongol & Associates Law and Communications,[1] described as handling corporate, civil and criminal litigation as well as public relations consultancy.[2]
Spokesperson of the Senate Impeachment Court
19th Congress (2025)
On June 11, 2025, Senate President Francis Escudero appointed Tongol as the official spokesperson of the Senate Impeachment Court. Escudero cited Tongol’s expertise in media law and government policy, his commitment to transparent communication, and his ability to manage sensitive legal proceedings.[5]
In June 2025 he criticised the House of Representatives for faulting the court instead of complying with its orders,[6] In July 2025 Senator Risa Hontiveros said that he did not speak for the whole Senate but only for the presiding officer,[7] and Senator Panfilo Lacson said that, as he speaks on behalf of the senator-judges, he should not make it appear that he is cautioning or admonishing them.[8]
20th Congress (2026)
In July 2026 the Senate designated him again as spokesperson of the impeachment court for the second trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, citing his service in the same role during the 19th Congress.[1][2]
