The Regional Multicultural Magnet School is an American magnet school in New London, Connecticut. RMMS opened in 1992. In the 2021-2022 school year, RMMS served 501 students in grades K-5.[1]

History[edit]

RMMS was established in 1992 in the building of the former Bulkeley School. It was established to offer a "multicultural education curriculum" to the diverse population in New London.

Academics[edit]

  • IB (international baccalaureate) Primary Years Program
    • Applied in 2015, became official in 2019
    • International non-profit with 6000 challenging, engaging and relevant educational programs
    • Globally recognized
    • Provides additional structure that extends the RMMS curriculum
    • Adresses the social emotional and physical needs of the children
      • This has always been a priority at RMMS
  • Focus on 10 main qualities that they believe make for “highly effective people”
    • Caring, inquirer, thinker, principled, open minded, balanced, communicators, knowledgeable, risk-takers, and reflective
  • Another priority is strong communication skills
  • Skills are developed in both Spanish and English

In the 2022-2023 school year, 64.5% of RMMS students qualified for free and reduced lunch. In the state of Connecticut 42.4% of students qualified for free and reduced lunch in the 2022-2023 school year.

Campus[edit]

RMMS sits right on Huntington street, a busy road with fast moving cars. To the back is a residential neighborhood with multiple churches. It is within walking distance of the New London Public Library but is still considerably urban.
