Regular Music (album)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Regular Music is the 1st album by the post-minimal band Regular Music, released in 1985 on Rough Trade Records (catalog no. ROUGH 73; Vinyl LP)[1] and re-released on the Klanggalerie label (10th October 2019)[2].

10 musicians from a mixture of avant-rock, jazz, classical and pop backgrounds (This Heat, Loose Tubes, LSO, The Communards) play compositions by bandleader Jeremy Peyton-Jones [3] and keyboard player Jonathan Parry [4]

Background

Regular Music were “early instigators of the UK post-systems movement whose work straddles the spheres of rock, minimalism and post-punk” [5]; and their music has been described as possessing "all the rhythmic drive and power of minimalism...augmented with simple but beautifully constructed melodies" [6]; "a complex, jazzy, but compelling sound"[7]; "an aural crescendo consisting of 6 pieces knitted together by Jeremy Peyton-Jones and Jon Parry from a complex, colourful fabric of influences; modern, classical, jazz & rock rhythms coupled to an avant-garde mould of composition."[8]

Reception

"Une musique très inspirée, belle et prenante qui sort du cadre de l'école repetitive...je ne saurais trop vous inciter a découvrir ce groupe pleine de promesses" (Intra Musique [9] no. 13, 4e Trimestre, 1985)[10]

Legacy

Peyton Jones went on to lead a larger version of the group, Regular Music II, from 1990 onwards, and wrote for 10 theatre shows in the 1980s and early 90s (including Deadwood, 1985, at Kew Botanical Gardens in London) directed by Hilary Westlake with texts by David Gale and staged by the Lumiere & Son theatre company. [11]

Jocelyn Pook has said that this music was a 'huge influence' at a formative moment in her career.
