Rehab Eldalil (born 1989) is an Egyptian documentary photographer, visual storyteller, and educator.[1] Her practice focuses on themes of identity, belonging, and representation across the SWANA region, often employing participatory and collaborative methods with her subjects.[2]
Early life and education
Eldalil was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1989.[3] She received a Bachelor of Arts in Photography from Helwan University in Cairo in 2011.[2] In 2020, she earned a Master of Arts in Photography with distinction from Falmouth University in the United Kingdom.[4] She also completed a certificate in Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in 2021.[3]
Career and work
Eldalil's work explores collaborative visual storytelling, involving subjects as co-creators in the documentary process through embroidery, poetry, sound, and mixed media.[5]
Her long-term project, The Longing of the Stranger Whose Path Has Been Broken, was developed in collaboration with the Bedouin community of St. Catherine in South Sinai, Egypt.[5] The project examines Bedouin identity, connection to the land, and issues of representation.[5] In 2022, the project won the FotoEvidence W Award, leading to its publication as a photobook.[1]
In 2024, Eldalil debuted From the Ashes, I Rose (من الرماد نهضت), a project commissioned by Cortona on the Move and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).[4] Developed in collaboration with war survivors and patients at MSF's hospital in Amman, Jordan, the project reframes trauma into narratives of resilience and agency using mixed-media techniques and diamond painting.[6]
Eldalil is a founding member of aka TAWLA, a photobook collective focused on publications from the SWANA region, and serves as an adjunct professor of practice at the American University in Cairo.[3]
