Reliance SMART
Reliance SMART
Reliance SMART is a new age multi-purpose specialty supermarket store, founded in 2016..[1]. Reliance SMART offers a one stop shopping experience by offering fresh produce, bakery, dairy products, grocery, crockery, clothing, etc. In addition to that, to make it more easily accessible and feasible, it has also started a website called RelianceSMART.in which delivers over 6000+ products at the customer’s preferable place, be it home, office or on the move. The website is easily operable which makes it preferable for most customers to use. Also, on-time delivery is another one of their services that tempts the customer to its fullest. Over 6000+ products including grocery, bakery, dairy, crockery, etc. at lower rates than the MRP at your doorstep, well that’s the dream of every customer and Reliance have make sure of fulfilling that dream. Reliance SMART’s main objective is to target a larger amount of people for their daily and monthly household shopping. Its main target audience is women, particularly housewives because household products at prices lower than MRP attracts housewives precisely. Recently, approximately 30 more stores have been opened and it has total 127 numbers of stores all over India. It started its operations from Mumbai and Pune, but now there are Reliance SMART’s stores in almost all the big cities of India. Over 100 Reliance stores, primarily in value and jewelry formats were closed to start the operations of Reliance SMART. History Reliance SMART, with Mukesh Ambani as its Chairman, Damodar Mall as its Chief Executive Officer and Prrasana Shah as its Chief Merchandising Officer, started their operations in 2016 by shutting the shops which were unprofitable and replacing them by the concept of Reliance SMART[2].
Reliance SMART vs Reliance FRESH
Reliance FRESH, which was one of the first subsidiaries of Reliance Retail, started its operations in 2006 with the main promises of freshness, availability and savings. Reliance FRESH was mainly targeting small local grocery stores, whereas SMART came into picture to target a larger number of people by targeting the big retail stores such as DMart, Big Baazar, etc. Reliance FRESH operated in a smaller manner, whereas Reliance SMART is a bigger concept. A common thing about both Reliance FRESH and Reliance Smart is that they both emphasize their main focus on availability and selling of fresh fruits and vegetables. Today, they both operate and sell over 200 metric tonnes of fruits and over 300 metric tonnes of vegetables every day[3]
Competitors
SMART’s main competitors are: • DMart- It is owned, operated and governed by Avenue Supermarts ltd. which was founded by Mr. Radhakishan Damani. He is a respected businessman and an acute investor in the Indian equity market. DMart launched its first store in 2002 in Powai. DMart has now made its presence in 164 locations in different states across India. DMart is a one-stop shop for basic home and personal products. DMart’s main agenda is to provide the best value possible for its customers. Mr. Damani, being a firm believer of business fundamentals and strong ethical values has managed to build DMart into a large, efficient and profitable retail chain that is highly respected and recommended by employees and customers[4]. • Big Baazar- It was founded in 2001 by Kishore Biyani under the parent organization- Future Group- that holds a prominent position in Indian retail, fashion and household sector. It is one of the oldest hypermarket type retail chains in India with more than 250 stores around India. Home, food and fashion are the three most essential parts of Indian retail that Big Baazar claims to cover. Big Baazar consists of different retail chains like Food Baazar and fbb which form an integral part of Big Baazar’s identity. Fbb has grown into a major fashion brand in India. Big Baazar is known for its understanding of customer’s needs and comforts. Big Baazar’s motto is ‘care for the customer’[5]. Even after having such a difficult competition from these retail marts- that were founded long before Reliance SMART and that have also made a quiet significant presence in the Indian market, SMART had been able to overcome its challenges and now is growing 4 times faster in whole modern trade.
RelianceSMART.in
Other than the retail competitors, the online grocery stores like BigBasket, Grofors are also a big challenge in front of Reliance SMART, as nowadays, most of the customers prefer on the door services more rather than going to stores. So, to counter this problem, SMART also opened its website named RelianceSMART.in which provides a wide range of brands and products such as fruits and vegetables, cereals, household, beauty and personal care, pet food, packaged items, baker and dairy, etc. at your doorstep, as soon as possible. Also, the website is very easy to operate which makes it preferable for customers to use. It also provides various payment options to make it easy for customers to choose from their choice of payment mode. Currently you can have doorstep delivery services from Reliance SMART in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore. Company’s aim is to soon spread these services to all the major cities of India. Unique Selling Proposition SMART have various different offers and discounts but its main USP that remains constant are: • 365 days discount • Sugar at 9 rupees per kg on shopping of 1499 • 5%, 6% or 7% discount on all products on the basis of location • Supply of fruits and vegetables available all the time[6]
Future Planning
The future seems bright for Reliance SMART and its planning for ahead is simple. It is aggressively opening up of stores to cover the brand presence around the whole country and shutting down of unprofitable Reliance stores. The concept of Reliance SMART is being considered and predicted as a big hit for Reliance Retail as it has already achieved favorable results in a short span of two years and everyone is eyeing on the effect that Reliance SMART will have on Indian retail market and on the unstoppable growth of its competitors, mainly DMart.
