Remodelmate is an online marketplace for buying, selling, and managing home renovations. Founded in Washington, D.C., in 2016, remodelmate uses a proprietary technology platform to connect homeowners with local, vetted contractors and help them manage the home renovation process online. The service is free for homeowners who do not elect a project Concierge to personally manage a home renovation project. Rmodelmate earns a fixed percentage from each job that a contractor books through the platform.[1]

History[edit]

Chad Hall founded remodelmate in 2016 following a round of layoffs when his employer, the daily deals company LivingSocial, was acquired by Groupon. Before joining LivingSocial, Hall worked as a product specialist for general contracting company Long Home & Fence, in Maryland. After being laid off, a friend asked him for help finding contractors to remodel her kitchen, and thought he would have insight into the renovation process. The friend hired him to manage her renovation process, and that's when he saw that many people rely on friends, or mates, to help them with residential remodeling projects and construction workers needed to outsource their marketing, business development, and administrative tasks in order to grow their businesses.

Hall worked out of 1776 (company) to launch his new idea, remodelmate, and eventually migrated to Humble Ventures' accelerator program to further hone the vision for the company. After graduating from the accelerator, remodelmate operated entirely remotely with only the occasional meetings out of the University of Maryland's Startup Shell. The company is now headquartered in Washington, D.C..[2]

Funding[edit]

In March 2018, remodelmate announced that they were seeking $420,000 in seed money[3]. Six months later, the company announced the hiring of Jonathan Amar as their first-ever Head of Growth, and that funds were committed for the full seed round[4]
