René Samson (Paramaribo, June 25 1948 – Amsterdam, July 5 2019) was a Dutch composer and chemist, born and raised in Suriname.
Career[edit]
Chemistry[edit]
Samson studied chemistry at the University of Amsterdam and subsquently at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. After his PhD, he worked for several years as a postdoc in the United States (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge), and then worked for Shell in the Netherlands. He continued to do so until his retirement. After his retirement, several of his papers were published, including those co-authored with Joseph Biello.[1]
Music[edit]
As a flutist, René Samson studied with Hans van de Weyer and Eleonore Pameijer and played in various orchestras. He started composing at age forty. To this end he took lessons with Monique Suring, Leo Samama and Klaas de Vries.[2] René Samson composed choral works, music theatre, and instrumental and vocal chamber music, often commissioned by prominent Dutch and foreign musicians. For the work Contrasting Moods, René Samson received an award ("Special mention and medal of the Presidente della Republica Italiana") at the international composition competition "Città di Udine".
René Samson Foundation[edit]
Following his death, a foundation was established,[3] with the objective of preserving René Samson's compositions,[4][5] and to have his worked performed regularly.
