Renee Faia is an American actress, voiceover artist, award-winning film director, photographer, clothing designer and lead singer of the dream-pop indie band The Mazarines..[1]
Early Life and Career[edit]
Renee Faia was born in Bedford, Ohio. She received a scholarship to Columbus College of Art and Design where she studied painting and clothing design.
Upon moving to Los Angeles, she worked several years for Castle Rock Entertainment as a costume stylist for television programs such as Seinfeld and later as an art department coordinator in film for such movies as City Slickers , A Few Good Men, and Forget Paris.[2]
Film and TV[edit]
As an actress, Faia's first film role was as Lisa in The American President directed by Rob Reiner in 1995. The same year, she appeared as Alice opposite Jason Alexander in the 111th episode of Seinfeld, The Engagement on NBC.[3]
In 1998, Faia was chosen from a nation-wide search for her first starring role depicting Cher in the Sonny & Cher television biopic And the Beat Goes On: The Sonny and Cher Story.[4] Co-produced by his widow, Congresswoman Mary Bono, and based on Sonny Bono's autobiography And the Beat Goes On[5], the film follows Sonny and Cher's relationship from their first meeting at a lesbian nightclub in Los Angeles in 1961[6] through their divorce in 1975 and subsequent reunion on the David Letterman late night show.[7]
The film premiered on February 22, 1999 on American Broadcasting Company, with Jay Underwood (Afterglow, Not Quite Human) playing opposite Faia as Sonny.[8] While the film was met with mixed reviews claiming favoritism on Sonny's side, Faia's Cher was well received by critics.[9] Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly described her performance as "uncanny - she gets the flat, sarcastic voice and the eye-rolling, head-wagging sarcasm of her subject down cold."[10]
In 2002, Neil Burger directed Faia in his first film Interview with the Assassin. The film was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards in 2003. The same year, she portrayed Jenny Coleman in Disney's Where the Red Fern Grows opposite singer Dave Matthews, and she starred as Angela in High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story (also known as Stuey) opposite Emmy Nominee Michael Imperioli. Based on the true story of poker champion Stu "The Kid" Ungar, the film received a Prism Festival Award and the Audience Award at the Nashville Film Festival.
In 2016, Faia starred in Loveology, a film by Mark Manalo, a director chosen by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as a finalist for their fourth season of HBO's Project Greenlight.[11] Faia followed this venture in 2017 by writing, directing, co-producing and starring in the short film Beautiful Dead Things with award-winning cinematographer Brad Rushing. The film won the Platinum REMI Award for Dramatic Short at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival[12], Best Experimental Film at the Female Eye Film Festival, and won the Jury Choice Award at the Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase during the 70th Cannes Film Festival.[13] In 2020, she was named one of the Diversity in Cannes Top 10 Filmmakers of the Decade based on her previous selection in the festival.[14]
Music and voiceover[edit]
Faia is the lead singer of The Mazarines, a dream-pop indie band based in Los Angeles, California. As a solo artist, Faia contributed vocals to the album Center of Six by Josh Clayton-Felt released in 2003.[15]
Faia branched into music video direction in 2014 with the video Julie Drinks, introducing artist Willodean.[16] She has directed all of The Mazarines' music videos, including Summer Wine, which won 2nd place at the International iPhone Film Festival.[17][18]
As a voiceover artist, Faia most notably voiced the English dub of the role of Gentiana in Final Fantasy XV.[19] She has voiced the role of Colleen Holt in the animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender on Netflix, the role of Karai in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and the role of Sarah Bridger in the video game Overkill's The Walking Dead. In 2017, she filled in for Demi Moore in the archival footage of the video game Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance by voicing the character of Esmeralda. She also voiced commercial campaigns for the brands Lancôme and Levi Strauss & Co., including the Levi's commercial in 2012, directed by cinematographer Lance Acord[20]
Fashion[edit]
Faia is the creator/designer of the Stellina Loungewear Collection fashion line. The line originally began as a collaboration with friend Audie England, entitled Nae & Audie, and was sold in Fred Segal. The cotton pajama sets and robes were featured on Oprah's O List and Extra, and have been worn by A-listers such as Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian, Sheryl Crow, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Alba.[21]
