The Renfe Class 433 (Renfe 300 Class between 1941 and 1971) was a series of electric multiple units (1.5 kV DC, 677 kW) built by the Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval and Westinghouse. Each unit was composed of a powered car and a trailer with a driving cab. They were equipped with 4 motors powered via pantographs and had both compressed air and rheostatic brakes. They were colloquially known as "pingüinos" ("penguins"). Between 1928 and 1957, a total of 93 units of this type were built, which can be grouped into four subseries.
The second subseries included units numbered 339 to 348 and was delivered to the Compañía de Ferrocarriles del Norte between 1934 and 1935. The third subseries was built in 1956 and 1957.
Evolution
Around 1964, all the “three-hundreds” underwent an overhaul at the Susundegui Workshops, during which their livery was changed to green and silver, giving them an appearance more similar to the “new” “nine-hundreds.” (Or Renfe Class 439)
Later, in another overhaul and interior refurbishment carried out in the early 1970s at the same workshops, their livery was changed again—this time to two shades of blue. Around that time, they were also reclassified as the 433-500 series, in accordance with the UIC numbering system.
However, starting in 1965, they began to be withdrawn as the voltage changed from 1500V to 3000V. The last ones were removed in March 1991.
