Renná Bruce (born 23 January 1969) is an author, presenter, and performer. She is the author of the children's book series 'Jazlyn J' and has a background in media (radio, TV, and newspaper) and marketing.

Early life and education[edit]

Bruce was born in Rivers, Manitoba to Dave and Darlene Bruce. She has one brother. She attended several public schools as her father was in the military and they were transferred and moved every few years. She graduated from Bayside Secondary School in Bayside, Ontario and went on to attend a year at the University of Windsor for Radio and Television Broadcasting then on to Ryerson for Radio and Television Arts (Now Toronto Metropolitan University) where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree.

Career[edit]

Bruce worked in radio in advertising sales (CHWK-Chilliwack), doing some voice-over work while there; in newspaper as a freelance writer, and then advertising sales (Shuswap Market and Salmon Arm Observer) before finding some voiceover work for Sun Cable, and then both on-air and as a copywriter for CKXR-Salmon Arm.

From there she found herself in marketing roles with Bingemans, Volumes Publishing and Fairview Park Mall (a Cadillac Fairview property) before going to work for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and then a movie production company- ITN Distribution-doing movie poster artwork preparation and metadata for streaming services.

She also enjoyed life on stage playing in theatre productions of 'Never Too Late' playing Kate Clinton (Chilliwack, B.C.), 'The Melville Boys' playing Loretta (Belleville, ON), and 'The Playboy of the Western World' where she played Pegeen. (Belleville, ON)

Her career as an author began in 2002 when she showed a friend her stories about a character that learns as she grows. That friend then took the stories to Volumes Publishing where they were picked up and published.

Personal life[edit]

Bruce is married with 2 children. She is an advocate for those with Autism, including her own son, and has always encouraged people to lead with kindness- because you never know the battle others are facing. It ended up being a consistent theme in her books.

Achievements[edit]

Bruce's books have received high praise for their messaging.

'Jazlyn J's Day of Danger' has been used as a featured book teaching the importance of knowing your danger symbols on household products. It was used by the Hospital for Sick Kids Poison Control Centre for reference and was chosen as the book for reading in Hospitals across Canada for its safety message.  This book was also endorsed by the Health Canada Product Safety Division as it shows kids the importance of understanding product warning labels.[5]

Three of the books donate a dollar from every book sold to charity.

'Jazlyn J Gets a Goal' has a foreword written by hockey Dad, Walter Gretzky and a $1.00 from each book sold goes to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

'Jazlyn J's Bad Hair Day' has a foreword written by comedian Colin Mochrie and a $1.00 from each book sold goes to The Sick Kids Foundation.

'Jazlyn J's Ideal Instrument' has a foreword written by musician Tom Cochrane and a $1.00 from every books sold goes to the Parkinson Society of Canada.

David Suzuki wrote the foreword for 'Jazlyn J and the Recycled Rabbit'- a book that encouraged the reuse of products in our homes, giving a second and third life to items with the messaging of reducing, reusing and recycling.

Body Break's Hal Johnson wrote the foreword for Bruce's book, 'Jazlyn J Unplugged'- encouraging kids to unplug and get outside, get active and have fun.

3-time Olympic Gold medalist and hockey broadcast television analyst, Jennifer Botterill wrote the foreword for Bruce's book, 'Jazlyn J and Quick, Quiet Quinn'- a book that looked at bullying and how sometimes, communication can make a big difference. A thousand copies of this book were purchased and distributed by an anti-bullying group on the East Coast to area schools.
