ResetEra is an independent internet forum dedicated to the discussion of video games and contemporary culture. Founded in late 2017, ResetEra quickly gained prominence for being the source of a wide range of gaming rumors and leaks,[1][2][3] and members of the video game industry are known to also participate in discussions on the website.[4]

History[edit]

On October 21, 2017, following allegations of sexual harassment by the video game forum NeoGAF's owner Tyler Malka, a majority of the moderation staff resigned, and the site went offline soon after.[5][6] During its shutdown, members of the forum flocked to the chat platform Discord in order to continue their discussions, and a group of former NeoGAF members took it upon themselves to create a new forum.[7]

Three days later on October 24, 2017, ResetEra was launched, with the initial wave of members composed of former NeoGAF users.[8] To deter internet trolls from flooding the forum, the ResetEra staff worked with the various communities to filter their members to ensure that unknown users were not part of the initial wave. Registration codes were given out via Discord and launch windows of approximately 15 minutes were opened periodically in order to let the Discord members register.[9][10]

After these initial registrations, ResetEra requires users to sign up with a non-disposable email account (e.g., .edu, ISP, or workplace email address). Members of the game industry who wish to post with a verified account can contact administrators for a specialized identifier.[11]

As of March 2021, ResetEra has over 53,000 registered users.[12] It has been described as one of the internet's largest video game forums.[13][14]

Industry response[edit]

Notable members of the video games industry have signed up to be members of the website, such as journalist Geoff Keighley, James Stevenson, the Community Director for Insomniac Games, and Thomas Mahler, director of Moon Studios among other who continue to interact with the ResetEra community.[15][16][17]

In addition, employees and representatives from 343 Industries, DICE, Tecmo Koei, Playground Games, Microsoft, Remedy Entertainment, Sony, and dozens of others frequently post under verified accounts. Video game journalists such as Jason Schreier from Bloomberg News, John Linneman of Eurogamer, and other reporters from major outlets like Game Informer and IGN also interact with the community. Notably, on April 11, 2018, Cory Barlog, Creative Director at SIE Santa Monica Studio, entered the God of War Review thread to discuss the upcoming game.[18]

During the E3 2018 Inside Xbox special, Rod Fergusson, studio head of The Coalition, mentioned that he stayed up until 3AM reading responses on the site about their upcoming game, Gears 5.[19]

Popular video producers like Giant Bomb, GameXplain, and Easy Allies also have verified accounts and interact with their fanbases on ResetEra.

From November 2017 to March 2018, ResetEra also hosted a Q&A section, called Q&Era. After administrators announced a company Q&A session, users could submit their queries to the moderation staff, who would then provide them to the developer(s) to answer. During that time, Q&Era hosted Insomniac Games, Chucklefish, LizardCube, DotEmu, and Tom Happ and Dan Adelman, the creators of Axiom Verge.[20]

In the media[edit]

Since its inception, ResetEra has often been cited as a source for breaking news, particularly leaks of upcoming announcements in the video gaming industry.

Several notable leaks from ResetEra members are listed below:

  • March 18, 2018 - a user discovered a listing for Mario Tennis Aces before it had been announced, showing both the upcoming box art and screenshots in addition to the release date before the listing was deleted.[21]
  • April 17, 2018 - a user discovered Microsoft's new Xbox avatar system by searching through a design integration developer's portfolio.[2] The new avatar system was unveiled in June 2018 to Xbox Insiders.[3]
  • June 2, 2018 - a user caught a glimpse of pre-order information for Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Microsoft Store. It was quickly removed by Microsoft before turning out to be accurate several days later.[22]
  • January 11, 2019 - a user posted information about unannounced features and characters in the Resident Evil 2 remake after running the game's demo through a Hex Editor.[23]

In March 2021 after it was reported that the lead designer of Hogwarts Legacy published commentary that many found to be bigoted, the staff of ResetEra banned any threads about the upcoming video game sparking discussion in the industry.[14][24][25][26][27][13]

In 2018, Octopath Traveler was named as one of the ResetEra community's Most Anticipated Games for 2018. In response the official Bravely Default Twitter account created an illustration depicting Tressa from Octopath Traveler and Edea from the Bravely Default series with a message to ResetEra members saying "The entire team will do our best!".[28]

Criticism[edit]

David Jaffe, known for the Twisted Metal and God of War series, in response to a thread on ResetEra,[29] about a video by Jaffe advocating for allowing Milo Yiannopoulos to have a platform to speak,[30] tweeted "I was surprised, annoyed, amused, and bothered by how awful/nasty some of those comments were."[31]
