RetroWorld Expo is a gaming convention located in Hartford, Connecticut. Inaugurated in 2015.[1], the event showcases primarily retro games but also encompasses additional pop culture related items such as retro toys, modern video games and video game inspired art.[2]
The event is held annually at the Connecticut Convention Centre[3], and boasts a large open-plan meeting space[4]. This provides the Expo capacity to hold large attendances, as well as featuring live music[5], game-shows, auctions and provides the aforementioned opportunity for guests to play retro video-games and arcade style games.
Running across 2 days, the event also features live panellists; with guests predominantly being public figures within the video-gaming community and Youtube influencers[6]. The Expo will return on the 26th August 2023 for the next edition, again held at the Connecticut Convention Centre[7]
History
The first edition of the RetroWorld Expo was held in 2015; at this time it was located at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, Connecticut. The event remained at this venue for the 2016 edition, before expanding due to popularity[8] to the larger Connecticut Convention Centre venue in 2017. The event has since remained at this venue for each year’s edition to date.
In 2018, the RetroWorld Expo began hosting the 'Retro-World Rumble'; a competition involving popular combat-based video-games, such as Super Smash Bros. Since its foundation, the Retro-World Rumble has grown and become one of the largest regional events of its kind[9]. 2018 also saw the beginning of the RetroWorld Expo auctions. Hosted by Travis Landry with Bruneau and Co Auctioneers, the event auctions high-end vintage video-games and collectibles to the public.
In 2020 the event added a regional amateur wrestling event to its program. The Blitzkrieg Pro Wrestling event remains a part of the RetroWorld Expo to-date[10]. Since 2020 the event has also hosted the North-East Tetris World Championship Qualifiers[11]
In 2021 the event expanded to include popular tabletop card tournaments. These events showcased popular trading-card games such as Pokemon and YuGiOh!.[8]
Each year the show brings special guests from the video game industry as well as video game/pop culture influencers. Some more notable attendances include Mortal Kombat's Daniel and Carlos Pesina, Midway's Sal Davita, The Gaming Historian, Metal Jesus Rocks, Retronaut's Jeremy Parish and Ms. Pacman designer Steve Golson amongst others.[6][12]
