The Rexhë Gashi Tower is a monument in Skenderaj, Kosovo, honoring the Gashi family.[1]

History[edit]

A two-story building in the Gashi neighborhood of Abri e Ulët, in the Skenderaj municipality, is linked by popular tradition to the folk musician Rexhë Gashi. A member of the family, Miftar Gashi, reports that it was built around 1906 by Zeqir Gashi by two family friends, Vesel Zymberi and Bajrushë Hyseni, masons from Likovac. The barbed-wire-ringed first floor served as a stable while the second was a guest lounge with a sofa, which hosted gatherings and dignitaries.

Nationalists met there often during World War I, World War II, and even the Kosovo War, including Azem Galica, Shaban Polluzha, and Xhemajl Abria. After World War I, the tower served as a merchant guesthouse. As a town elder, Zeqir used the tower as a meeting place to settle blood feuds. People used it regularly until 1988, with the family continuing to live there until the end of the Kosovo War. After extensive restoration work, the tower was opened to the public as a heritage site by the Kosovo Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in 2014.

The foundations are stone, while the walls are from hewn stone reinforced by five rows of wooden slats, the wooden roof forming a sixth. Reinforced pillars on the ground floor stabilize the upper level. The mezzanine, stairs, and ceilings are all wooden. The woodwork is unusually intricate for the region, including ocher-colored rosette moldings on ceiling shelves.
