rgc:audio software is a former music production software company based in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina and currently a brand of Singaporean music company BandLab Technologies. The company's best known product was their award-winning synthesizer software, z3ta+. z3ta+ introduced[1] a unique waveshaping technology which made the synthesizer popular among EDM producers and DJs (such as Avicii[2]). The company also offered a range of music software products, including virtual instruments such as Triangle I, Square I, Pentagon I, Triangle II, as well as the introduction of the SFZ format, sfz, and sfz+ players.

The company was acquired[3] in 2005 by Cakewalk. In 2018, Singapore-based BandLab Technologies purchased some of Cakewalk, Inc.'s assets, and continued z3ta+'s development as part of its portfolio.

History[edit]

rgc:audio was established by René Ceballos, a software engineer with a passion for music and technology. His goal for the company was to offer musicians and audio engineers powerful, versatile tools that would enhance their abilities to produce digital music. With its innovative ideas and commitment to quality, rgc:audio quickly garnered a reputation as a forward-thinking player in the world of audio software development.

In 2011, Cakewalk announced[4] the release of z3ta+ 2, the updated version of the award-winning virtual instrument.

z3ta+[edit]

The z3ta+ software synthesizer is rgc:audio's most recognized product. Celebrated for its unique and rich sound, z3ta+ offered users a high level of control over sound shaping and modulation. With a sophisticated modulation matrix and waveshaping capabilities, it quickly became a favorite tool among electronic music producers. Its flexible and diverse sound production made it an adaptable tool suitable for various genres, cementing its place in music production history.

Other Software[edit]

In addition to z3ta+, rgc:audio developed a series of other software synthesizers including Square I, Pentagon I, and Triangle I & II. These synthesizers, while not as widely recognized as z3ta+, still left a significant mark on the industry. They were praised for their distinctive sounds and intuitive design, adding to the company's reputation for quality and innovation.

Acquisition by Cakewalk[edit]

In the early 2000s, rgc:audio's success caught the attention of Cakewalk, a well-established music software company. Following the acquisition, rgc:audio's unique technologies were integrated into various Cakewalk products, significantly enhancing Cakewalk's digital audio workstation offerings. Most notably, z3ta+ continued to be developed and supported under the Cakewalk brand, ensuring the software's ongoing relevance in the digital audio production realm.

Legacy[edit]

Despite its relatively short lifespan, rgc:audio's impact on digital music production was substantial. Its software, particularly z3ta+, is still used by many electronic music producers today. Through its innovative software designs and commitment to sound quality, rgc:audio significantly contributed to the evolution of music production technology.

Even after the acquisition by Cakewalk, the influence of rgc:audio can still be seen. The continued popularity of z3ta+ and the integration of rgc:audio's unique technologies into Cakewalk's product lineup demonstrate the enduring legacy of rgc:audio in the music production software industry.
