History[edit]

The East Asian Library at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) was established in 1948 to support the university's teaching and research programs in East Asian studies.[1] It is a branch library of the UCLA Library system, and was named after then professor Richard C. Rudolph of the East Asian Studies. The library selects, organizes, and makes available Chinese, Japanese and Korean language materials, and its staff provides reference and instruction services to optimize access to and use of the collections.

Collections[edit]

Chinese Collection[edit]

The Library has a strong Chinese collection in many subject areas, with more than half of its volumes and serials relating to Chinese studies. The library's Chinese collection has traditional strengths in the areas of archaeology, religion (especially Buddhism), folklore, pre-modern history, classical literature, and fine arts. The newly developed collection especially strong in the areas of contemporary history, local gazetteers and genealogy, motion pictures and documentary films, Chinese operas and theater, and statistical yearbooks. The Chinese collection also includes a special collection of archival materials, imperial palace exam papers, historical photographs, etc. In recent years, the Chinese collection acquires a significant number of electronic resources, including online databases, electronic journals and books, digital images and audio-visual materials.[2]

Japanese Collection[edit]

The Library’s Japanese collection is strong in Buddhism, fine arts, literature, history, and folklore, with recent growing strength added in modern intellectual history and cultural studies. The collection also includes ca. 800 titles of pre-modern publications and manuscripts. Recent additions include a collection of books originally belonged to the late Prof. Marius B. Jansen (1922-2000), ca. 2,000 volumes on Japanese history, and another belonged to the late Mr. Jiro Tokuyama (1919-2001), over 2,600 volumes in business management, comparative cultures, and international relations.[3]

Korean Collection[edit]

The Library's Korean collection, which has been acquired actively since 1985, has strengths in history, literature, Christianity, Buddhism and folklore. The Korean collection supports the instructional needs of the Korean studies program in addition to multidisciplinary research. The Korean collection subscribes to all of the major Korean full text databases, newspaper archives, and reference databases.[4]
