Richard Corbridge

Richard Corbridge (born Yorkshire, England, 23 February 1974) is the Chief Digital and Information Officer for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (November 2017 – present). Working in digital health for 20 years, Corbridge is known for innovation in this field.[1][2]. He has been placed in the top 20 CIOs in the UK CIO100 for the last four years[3][4][5]. 2017 saw Corbridge’s rank increase to number one, recognising him as the most ‘transformative and disruptive CIO in the UK’[6].

Career[edit]

Starting his career as a Quality Analyst at Perot Systems in 1996, Corbridge moved into health with a role as Programme Manager at the NHS Information Authority in 1998. Periods at Solihull Care Trust (now part of Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust), the National Programme for IT in its most formative stages, NHS Connecting for Health and the NHS Information Centre (now merged organisations named NHS Digital) followed.

In 2011, Corbridge took up his first CIO role, at the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN) in Leeds. Here Corbridge led the implementation of digital systems to reduce the time to start a clinical trial in the UK, from over 200 days to less than 12 days[7], in two years. Corbridge also led the delivery of the first global dementia research information system, Join Dementia Research[8] , a solution linking patients, healthcare professionals and researchers together to enable research and the first information strategy for clinical research in the NHS and led the initial work in designing the data standards for Genomics England.

During this tenure, Corbridge was also non-executive director for Draper and Dash[9] , a start-up organisation that has since become a global heath data analytics company[10].

Relocating to the Republic of Ireland in December 2014, Corbridge took up dual positions as Chief Information Officer for the Health Service Executive and CEO of eHealthIreland[11] at a time when the Irish healthcare system was deemed to be approximately 16 years behind the digital curve[12].

Corbridge has been awarded several times during his time in Ireland for being a leader and innovator, receiving the eGov Awards Net Visionary award in 2017[13], identified as one of Hotwire’s Global 100 tech influencers in 2016 and 2017[14], awarded Person of the Year (TECH Excellence & TECH Pro Awards) 2016[15] and was one of Computer Weekly’s top 5 rising stars in 2015[16].

During his time in Ireland, Corbridge was responsible for implementing the national infrastructure for an Individual Health Identifier for every citizen of Ireland[17], digitised the referral process from primary care to acute[18][19], enabled the first genomic sequencing programme in Ireland for Epilepsy patients[20][21] and put in place the largest desktop upgrade programme in the European Union[22].

Latterly Corbridge was announced as the Most Disruptive Tech or Digital Leader in the Talent Unleashed Awards 2017[23], acknowledging key leaders in technology, and is the voice of the new HIMSS Europe's HITMakers podcast[24].

Public intellectual work[edit]

Corbridge enjoys the opportunity to share experiences, tell stories[25][26][27] and learn from others, and speaks on digital heath and innovation at a wide variety of conferences and other events[28][29].

Widely published, Corbridge has writes for a number of organistaions within his field, including CIO Magazine[30][31][32], and has his own blog, where he shares information on leadership and digital health.

CIO100 (UK): The CIO 100 recognises the leading CIOs in the UK that have a central role in modernising and driving business change in their organisations. It is compiled each year to showcase the achievements and ambitions of 100 business and technology executives leading transformation across a diverse range of markets. In 2017, Corbridge was voted number 1[33] for his digital leadership, supporting a broad innovation agenda. He was voted number 5 in both 2016[3] and 2015[34] and number 15 in 2014[5].

IT Project of the Year (public sector) 2017 - Tech Excellence Awards: This Awards programme recognises excellence not only in implementing tech solutions, but also in the business of marketing and implementing technology for business[15]. Awarded to Corbridge for his Epilepsy Light House project which works with children and adults with Intellectual Disabilities who also have epilepsy, to develop a new paradigm of healthcare delivery for Ireland[35].
