Richard Henvill

Richard Henvill was born in 1653 Lower Looke, Dorsetshire. He died in 1732 at the age of 79 years old.[1] He was an 18th-century slave trader, and was a part of the Masters of the Society of Merchant Ventures.[2] He was a High Sheriff of Dorset in 1723.[citation needed]

Slave Trade[edit]

Richard Henvill started his career as a slave trader in 1709.

Henvill Gally This ship was owned by Richard Henvill. The ships captain was named Joseph Martin, for Great Britain. The voyage began in Bristol, England on November 9, 1709. The voyage intended to start with 400 slaves, and embarked with 232 slaves from Africa. There was a total of 186 slaves that disembarked in the Americas to their original owners. The ship arrived on October 7, 1710 with the slaves, and left for its homeport on December 5, 1710. The voyage was completed on February 16, 1711.[3]

Oldbury This ship was owned by Richard Henvill, John Corsley, Richard Hawkesworth, Robert Rodgers, and William Baker. The captain was named John George, for Great Britain. The voyage began in Bristol, England on September 5, 1720. The voyage started with 261 slaves from Africa. There was a total of 209 slaves that disembarked in the Americas to their original owners. The ship arrived on April 2, 1721 with the slaves, and left for its homeport at an unknown date in 1721. The voyage was completed on July 18, 1721.[4]
